There is no one quite like Afife Harris, owner/operator of Lebanese Cuisine. Afife came to New Zealand 25 or so years ago from Lebanon and has made an indelible mark on Dunedin and the people who live here. Her passion is about helping others and she has selflessly gone about doing that the whole time she has been here. Whether she is organising car boot sales to raise money for driving lessons for Syrian refuges, co-ordinating and writing cook books, teaching how to cook Lebanese food, facilitating multi cultural women’s groups or just simply donating any excess food left over after the market to those that need it she is a dynamic force of a woman who gets things done and, as such, is a huge asset to our city and farmers market.
Afife has been a vendor at the farmers market since 2006. She began with just three dishes – hummus, tabbouleh and falafel – but now has 9 or 10 different dishes on offer ranging from the well known to her special Eggplant and Pomegranate Molasses special dish! Everything is made from scratch and we get to taste divine Turkish Delight, Dolmas, Katafi and Baklava, Mamoual, Borek, Fattier, Labneh and different salads and dips.
Afife sources most of her ingredients locally but sometimes has to buy the more exotic ingredients from further afield.
