This Week at the Farmers Market

10th April 2021

Hi there

sunrise.jpg

Looking forward to a full contingent of vendors this weekend after a short week & the change over of the clocks, it will certainly be lighter setting up in the mornings.

Was lovely to get away to do some walks in Canterbury – Oxford, Arthurs Pass & Waikari over Easter with friends & I hope you all had a nice one too.  I of course, had to have my farmers market fix, and the Christchurch Farmers Market in Riccarton was fabulously gorgeous with tasty treats under the colourful autumn leaves, but it made me realize how lucky I am here at the Otago Farmers Market to buy my organic & spray free weekly supplies of fresh fruit & vegies in abundance, which is the beauty of an authentic farmers market of which we are.

Very pleased to hear from Brendon this week from Pauley Family Orchard, the second harvest of figs is ready & they plan to be at the Market this weekend.  Fig & a dollop of mascarpone with a drizzle of pure maple syrup is a simple, divine dessert!

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market.

See you Saturday.

NZ Nuts This Weekend

download.jpg

It’s been a very busy week harvesting and drying nuts – perfect harvest conditions and most nuts were pre-dried in the sun on the day of harvest before going into the drying room… and I have them ready for the market now.

This week we will have:

Walnuts – Vina – in shell

Almonds

Chestnuts – please store these in the vegetable chiller drawer so they do not dehydrate and become hard.

Quince

Those of you familiar with Chestnuts will have them on your favourites list… if you haven’t tried them yet, they are to be recommended.  I tend to have a savoury taste, so my preferences are to pop them in with roast or casserole chicken, popped in alongside mixed roasted vegetables or with sautéed cabbage, in cream of chicken and chestnut soup, or included in the stuffing of roasts – but if you have a sweet taste sweetened chestnut puree, whipped cream and meringue is hard to beat!!  To prepare the chestnut slit the surface on the domed face, heat through in boiling water and peel while still hot… a bit of effort but the rewards make it worth it!  Enjoy.  Harvest season for fresh chestnuts is short – I’ll have them on the stall for about three weeks.

A word of warning to foragers – the horse chestnut is a different cultivar and POISONOUS – it has a different spikey outer hull and is easily identified at that stage – the nut inside is only suitable for playing conkers.  Before foraging, please do a website search so you can identify the horse chestnut.

Have a great week.
