This Week at the Farmers Market

10th July 2021

Hi there

I’m looking forward to a fresh buzzy market with lots of new faces in town with the All Blacks / Fiji rugby game, rug up, bring your mug & head to the Market this weekend.  We will be saying a big happy 13th birthday to Who Ate All the Pies – a Dunedin institution (& a firm favourite of a lot of our vendors).  And happy first birthday to Hazelnut Estate.  Janine often bakes something delicious, made with hazelnuts or hazelnut flour from their grove in Mosgiel for customers to sample.  Have you tried their delicious hazelnut chocolate spread yet?  (If you have big or small kids who love commercial nutella then check Hazelnut Estates far superior version, only 4 ingredients & so much tastier!).  AND another birthday – Sher from Earnscleugh Orchard gets a birthday present of a 4:30am start – love the dedication of our vendors!

Will be good to hopefully have a consistent supply of mushrooms at the Market.  Ben from Brightside Microgreens will be bringing his first batch of native oyster mushrooms as he diversifies his range, he has been working on perfecting the tricky business of growing these, an ever-evolving project, we wish him luck.

A reminder to bring bottles & jars back to vendors, I know Ronia & Pippi are needing more bottles back (I’m hoping they make their spiced pumpkin almond mylk again this week, amazing!!).  Also, if you have spare mugs at home, our cup library can always do with a top up (drop them to the caravan so we can sterilize them first, many thanks).

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

Remember to scan in at the cones at any of the entrances, happy first day of school holidays as well, see you Saturday.

This Week in the kitchen

Nickee is back in the kitchen this week with a fresh, crunchy salad & an appropriate Matariki dish of fish soup with rēwena bread. I’m definitely giving those tasty rugby ball/dragon tail shaped pasties a whirl, making great use of all our vendors delicious winter produce.

Please note an amendment to last week’s Slow Cooked Pork Hock recipe which omitted 4 cups of water - apologies from Nickee.

Hazelnut Estate

bags.jpg

Wow, it's hard to believe Hazelnut Estate has been trading for a year.  This weekend we are celebrating our '1st birthday'!  We would like to thank the many customers who have supported us over the last year.  It has been a year full of learning, adapting, reflecting, hard work and also many satisfying moments.  We have enjoyed getting to know fellow vendors at the OFM and also the regular customers who turn up every week regardless of the weather.  Come and visit our stall on Saturday for some birthday treats and giveaways, all based around tasty hazelnuts.  We will also have our regular products; dry roasted nuts, hazelnut flour which tastes great in many recipes and the latest addition to our range, chocolate hazelnut spread.
