Hi there
Joe from Wild Larder passed away this week. The “big man” as he was affectionately known was a stalwart of the farmers market. Long before he became a vendor 4 years ago, Joe was a favourite part of the market – he was always there supporting other vendors and shooting the breeze. In recent years Joe became quite the poster boy for the market. With his distinctive size, arresting good looks and charismatic appeal Joe was much loved by film crews and photographers coming through the market. Wild Larder showcased indigenous ingredients and Joe loved his wild food foraging and had an enormous knowledge about native flora and fauna. Please call by Joe’s market site this week if you would like to pay your respects to the big man. We are going to miss you Joe, RIP.
Michele and I have just returned from the Farmers Market New Zealand conference in Wellington. It was excellent to catch up with other market managers and to hear how well markets are doing with the renewed public fervour for buying local. Some of the highlights of the guest speakers were Kay Baxter from the Koanga Institute with her absolute, unswerving passion for regenerative, organic farming. She talked us through how you could make a modest living from just 40 square metres of land using regenerative farming practices. Angela Clifford, CEO of Eat NZ was inspirational in encouraging farmers markets to have a voice and to get around the table with policy makers to ensure that we are valued as central to food security, sovereignty, and resilience. Trish Allen from Mahurangi Waste Busters blew me away with her energy for zero waste. Reducing waste is taking climate action and so much that is currently wasted is actually useful. Listening to Trish’s story was inspirational – we can all do that bit more.
See you Saturday.

This Week in the kitchen
No market chef this weekend, however we are loving having samples dotted around the market again from our vendors for you to try.
Here's a recipe from our website if you feel like a little nostalgia & sweetness. You'll still find walnuts from various vendors like Ettrick Gardens & Willowbrook, etc... And here's an 'eat all your greens' risotto dish for you to whip up if you feel so inclined....

Jolly Joe Stout
|
An Ode to Joe from Toby & Debs - Catlins Kitchen & Brewery
Very sad news about Joe....still a bit of a shock...may he rest in power..
A true character..."the big man" as he was so fondly known...
We would like to commemorate and celebrate Joe.
Our lusciously unctuous stout (he had a tad of a penchant for stouts) this week will be named "Jolly Joe" in due deference and as a tribute and testament to the behatted wild foods maestro...
Cheers with tears...

Locavore Boxes to your Door!
|
If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:
Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm, Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka. That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz
