This Week at the Farmers Market

11th February 2023

Hi there

Wonderful to see the apples & pears starting to appear last weekend.  Ettrick Gardens had the Bon Chretien (Bartlett) & also Star Crimson Pears along with Destivale Apples and Earnscleugh CoOp Orchards had the Honey Pear along with Organic Sunrise Apples.  (Check out Slice of Heaven's blue cheese & fresh pear pizza if you like that combo, really good!).  And the stone fruit is at its best tasting juiciness right now everywhere around the Market. I tried the Willowbrook Orchard Rome Star free stone peaches last week which are great easy eating. I'm looking forward to finally getting late summer sweetcorn for the BBQ this weekend. We have a new seasonal garlic vendor starting this weekend – Jane & Dan from Moturata Gardens where they have a small block on the coast overlooking the mouth of the Taieri River.  Their stall will be up on the platform.  There are no figs this week but you can find lots of lovely Valentine’s Day gift ideas if you are looking – especially our vendors up the platform with their added value local longer life items (think olive oil, spicy pickles, honey, craft gin, preserves, etc) and we have nice cheeses, plants, Central Otago organic wine, port, herbs, etc or there are plenty of ingredients to make or bake that special dish this week.  Also we always have Market tea towels, beeswax wraps & Market Map gift cards all printed & made in Dunedin featuring a map of our vendors - this is available at the Market caravan at the main gate (along with Market gift vouchers). Abdal is doing a fundraiser on Sunday night with proceeds to families in need in Syria following the devastating Syrian earthquake, (see our Facebook post for details).

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (vege boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, Waitaki Orchard, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in the ORDER NOW button on our website

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.  And remember your containers, produce bags, berry punnets, plant pottles, jars, bottles, keep cup, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.  We thank you for your loyal support!

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you Saturday.

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

sTONEHURST.jpg (13)

Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis)

The original 'Marshmallow' confectionery! Large, green, velvety-toothed leaves with pale pink-white blossoms in late summer/early autumn.

Both the root and the leaves contain mucilage that is useful in thickening stews and soups - the root was once dried, crushed and then mixed with honey and used to make a soft (medicinal) sweet - the original 'marshmallow'! Originally thought to be from China marshmallows were eaten by the Egyptians, Syrians and Romans both for taste and medicine.

Culinary wise the flowers can be added to salads and the young leaves tips can be eaten raw in salads or steamed and served as a vegetable. The roots when dried and crushed can be used as a thickening agent or can be boiled whole to soften, then fried in butter.

Use the water in which you have boiled the leaves or roots as a soothing lotion for dry skin, sunburn (or general burns) or apply it to 'dry' hair. Perfect to soothe sore throats as either a tea or as a traditional 'marshmallow' sweet. Infuse the root as a tea for dry coughs, stomach ulcers, diarrhoea and insomnia. The root can be used as a poultice for inflammations - it was once used to reduce inflammation in teething babies and to stimulate tooth growth of late teeth.

Full sun, in moist, well-drained soils. Can tolerate coastal conditions. Up to 1.8m. Hardy perennial.

Marshmallow Root Tea: Use 2nd-year roots. Soak the clean, roughly cut roots in cold water for a couple of hours to extract the mucilage then heat as for a hot drink.
