This Week at the Market

11th July 2020

Hi there

hazelnuts.jpg

School holidays are a great time to introduce your kids to cooking and the farmers market. There is something special about shopping for the freshest ingredients  and then creating a meal together that the whole family can enjoy. As an added enticement the aqua van from the Marine Research Lab will be at the market this Saturday. They have rock pools with live inhabitants that are enormously fascinating for children and adults alike!

We are SUPER excited to welcome Hazelnut Estate to the market, starting this Saturday. Janine and Rodger Southby have taken over the property that once was Amazelnuts. They will be in a similar place to where Amazelnuts were in the lower market next to Evansadale Cheese.  And it's great to see the old ambulance up on the platform with Citizens now selling there fusion inspired brunches.

If you are missing having time in your garden, then perhaps you could spend sometime browsing catalogues and planning for when the ground is dry enough to get back out there. I am heartened by seeing my bulbs emerge from the ground and have started visualising their vibrancy in flower & if you want to talk bulbs then Jo-ann & Adam from Matheson & Roberts will be there this weekend again, they have great knowledge on that area.

See you Saturday.

Stay Warm.

Locavore Boxes to Your Door

locovores 2.jpg (1)

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:

Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz

The Community Stall this week is the AQUA VAN from the Marine Studies Centre

Aqua Van 2020.jpg

This is lots of fun for families!  The Aquavan will “pop-up” at the Otago Farmers Market this weekend to introduce local communities to their marine neighbours. The Aquavan, with its seawater system and touch tank, is an opportunity to engage families in close discoveries of local marine critters, while learning about the connection between land and sea. Join staff from the NZ Marine Studies Centre for a marine encounter, close to home!
