Hope this week sees you well & keeping warm.   We have plenty of warming foods & beverages this weekend & a NEW vendor - Soul Chai (up on the platform) – try Sophies freshly brewed traditional masala chai, handmade using trim jersey cow milk from Holy Cow with spices all blended from scratch.  This is an authentic chai experience without any artificial syrups.  I am looking forward to trying one this weekend, I have heard they are delicious, be sure to take your keep cup along for a discount as well. 

As usual we have lots of brunch options to dine in outside (up on the platform undercover) & some of our vendors have samples for you to try before you buy. 

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies, fruit & even bread.  Most vendors are more than happy to fill your containers.  And look out for the poster below here for stalls that can ReUse their packaging.  Well over half of our vendors are able to accept packaging back & for it to be re-used.  Little things done over & over do make a difference.  It might be that you use your cloth produce bag for your bread each week at Gilbert’s, Beano’s or Breads & More (try it, my bread seems to keep longer & fresher in a cloth bag) or reuse the same paper bag till it wears out, I have made mine last at least 10x in the past by bringing it back to be refilled each week for bread.  Take back those empty jars when finished with.  Catlins Kitchen give a discount on your next purchase when you do, likewise a $1 off with Blueskin Bay Honey, Catlins True Brew accept their bottles back, as do Dunedin Craft Distillery & Hazelnut Estate, the fresh juice bottles & tags & string from Ronia & Pippi, the jars from Marie’s Plant Based Food & Port Larder are all appreciated back.  Bennies Honey give a $2 discount on jar return with next purchase, etc.  No 8 Distillery give a whopping $5 discount off some bottle returns!  Oamaru Organic’s have no plastic, ALL their vegies are available loose to bag your own (a fine simple example of how it should / could be).  Agreeable Nature Free Range Eggs accept their clean egg cartons back.  Tartan Sari give a 50c discount on next purchase on their jar returns. Coko Lounge will fill your containers with their cacao powder, Brightside Microgreens will refill your containers, likewise Dunford Grove can usually refill their bottles of olive oil at a reduced price on return.  Wild Dispensary always have a basket on the corner of their stall for bottle returns. All our ready to eat vendors will fill your plate or container with brunch purchases.  Rosedale Orchard have plenty of fruit available for you to pick & choose & bag your own.  Abdal’s accept jar returns.  Ettrick Gardens accept their plastic containers back & encourage bag your own. Janefield Hydroponics will accept lettuce sleeves & strawberry punnets back.  Willowbrook Orchard often sell buckets of fruit which you can return the bucket the following week.  Bay Road Peanut Butter offer discounts on your next purchase with their jar returns.  Holy Cow have a bottle return scheme, when your first buy milk you pay a deposit for the bottle that you can bring back to be swapped or return for deposit. Most of our plant vendors accept their plant pots & plant labels back.  Both Evansdale & Whitestone Cheese will fill your containers with fresh cut cheese.  These are just a few of the options available for YOU to take charge on.  You can see it is up to us all as shoppers to take charge to eliminate the single use packaging.  The answers are at our fingertips (we just need to remember the containers & bags!).  Together we can help phase out as much plastic packaging as possible & show our vendors that they don’t need to pack everything (some things still do need certain packaging for health & safety reasons).  BUT Recyclable only goes so far & usually not enough and there is still the unknown of damage it can do to the environment.  The Solution: ReUseable goes all the way & back again, and again………

This Week in the kitchen

With uni exams just on the horizon, my flatmates and I have been opting for easy recipes that are easily reheated in a hurry! When looking through the archives this week, I kept this in mind. Soup is obviously a winter stand out, and the pear flan provides the perfect opportunity to make the most of the pears (and apples) that are at the market. NZ Nuts

It is Tim's turn at the market this week - so look out for the white Nut Van .... but with the yellow canopy! He has a full range of in-shell walnuts, along with halves and pieces, as well as almonds and chestnuts.  I suggest that you make the most of this opportunity to stock up on nut supplies for the winter as he does not intend to return until August - however, remember that we do arrange courier delivery to your home so always feel free to email an order to or text 0274466112. We will confirm our start back week at the market via the newsletter.

On the farm, winter tasks are in full progress - along with nut shelling and processing. This year along with the normal tidying and compost spreading around the orchard we are planning to propagate more walnut trees to fill in some of the gaps where rabbits have eaten the top out of trees, trees have been frosted, or we simply didn't have more trees to plant. We are not in the position of just being able to go to a nursery to buy a tree - our cultivars are not available and can no longer be imported so it is a matter of doing it ourselves....... and successfully grafting a walnut tree is challenging! OK, the grafting is easy - it is just getting the joint to callous which is difficult! In order to callous the graft joint needs to be maintained at 24.5 C for 30 days - during that time if the temperature drops even for just a day the union will not callous. We have tried numerous strategies, and had many failures - but then I guess when you know that every tree on the property has been grafted by us you also know we have had many successes too!! Wish us luck for this season's grafting so that we can continue to increase our production and potentially provide top quality Vina, Hartley, Franquette, Tehama and Geisenheimer Walnuts to you year-round!
