This Week at the Farmers Market

11th September 2021

Hi there

2.png (5)

We are all looking very much forward to seeing you this weekend under Delta L2.  We ask for your patience, as we can only allow 100 people into the Market at any one time.  We are hoping this will expand soon, as we know we are outdoor & have plenty of room.

If you can pre-order & pay from your favourite vendors online we will have a Click & Collect table at the South Gate by the Railway building for those that can collect.

To get into the Market we have only ONE ENTRANCE this weekend at the main middle gate on Anzac Ave.

We ask that you please SCAN in (there will be manual slips as well), wear a MASK (all vendors, staff & volunteers will be wearing theirs) & please respect the 2mt rule, for you to be able to enter into the Market.  This would be most appreciated.

There will be plenty of fresh produce, fish, new season plants, coffee & brunch to go (all ready to eats to be eaten off site to allow others in).

And I know I speak for around half of our vendors who could still operate in some capacity over lockdown, thank you for ordering their product.  This means so much to them that you could still support in some way in dire circumstances & I know in the coming weeks you will be supporting our local farmers, growers, producers & small businesses.  We managed to keep some form of virtual market open over the last month & many vendors will still take online orders, etc.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!   Hopefully things will be back to normal soon if we all play by the rules.

This Week in the kitchen

Cauliflower four ways... sounds like a fancy schmancy degustation right? Well you CAN do that, otherwise you could just get some inspo on different ways to cook the lovely seasonal Cauliflower from our vendors. There's some great toasty options given how the weather has got a bit nippy again.

Welcome to Spring, we hope you are all safe and well. This weekend we return to the market with plenty for you to choose from, beautiful flowering and scented spring bulbs and good selection of new seasons vegetable seedlings and selected herbs.

Our selection of plants will continue to increase in varieties over the coming weeks and including flowering annuals and perennials.

Shawn’s hens have started laying so will have a limited supply of our ‘Certified Organic eggs’ for sale.

We look forward to catching up with you soon at the market…

New beginnings, new way of living, new seasons Extra Virgin Olive Oil and new pricing.

Results from lab testing of this year’s oil scored the desirable attributes of- Fruity: 5.3, Pungent: 3.3, Bitter: 3.0.  Looking forward to seeing you on the platform this Saturday.

Did you know?

EVOO should have a balance between fruitiness, pungency, and bitterness.  There are other chemical criteria that our oil must meet, and I’ll talk about these in the coming weeks.

Given the uncertainty around market trading under L2, we have made the difficult decision that we won’t be attending this week’s market. Our Otaki Street shop will be open 9am to 12pm. We are also still offering both home delivery and click & collect (from our shop) via our online shop https://gilbertsfinefood.co.nz/products/. We thank you for your patience and understanding and hope to see you again next weekend.

Oamaru Organics

Hi all, hope everyone is keeping well.

It's that time of the year when we have our seasonal break. Unfortunately, this means that with our limited range of produce, we will not be back at the Farmers Market until Labour Weekend. We will continue to supply Taste Nature in Dunedin with our produce. Our Vege Boxes are also on pause until we have an increased selection of vegetables, hoping to bring those back for December. All the crew are flat out on the farm, planting lots of produce for the upcoming season. Jersey Benne's are looking good, garlic and carrots are in for Christmas.

We just want to thank you all for your support through this challenging year and hope everyone can still make it to the market to support all the hard-working vendors that have made it there.

Thanks Nigel and the Oamaru Organics Team.

NZ Nuts

valda.jpg

Tough times for growers... customers... vendors and the Otago Farmers Market management and staff alike - thoughts are with you all.

NZ Nuts had planned to be back in the market this spring with the balance of the 2021 harvest - but given the Level 2 trading environment and the fact that we are almost sold out, we have reluctantly decided to wait and return next season.  Any customers wanting walnuts (in shell or halves and pieces) can contact us on our new email nuts@nznuts.co.nz and I will arrange collection in Dunedin.

I apologize that Olivia has been unable to thank our customers in person - but we send our best wishes to each of you and look forward to working with you again in 2021.
