chill is in the air

12th July 2018

Hi there

It is so hearteningly to see so many of you using your own bags, cups and containers when shopping at the market. A year ago I never could remember to have reusable bags or cups on hand when shopping but now I seem to have switched gears and having my own has become habitual. If I can do it, anyone can!

The market is working hard to reduce waste across all waste streams, not just single use plastic bags. We believe that we have and continue to foster a community of reduction. Reducing waste is built into our structures. All new vendors coming on board must have sustainable packaging and be actively supporting other vendors by buying their seconds or otherwise wasted items to add value to in baking and preserves. Many vendors use glass packaging that they accept back and recycle.

The market is made up of over 70 vendors. The Trust believes that a one size fits all policy banning all plastics is not supportive of the diversity within the vendor group. Rather they seek to work to find alternative solutions that will continue to reduce waste from the market.

All of us who are part of the market community need to be mindful of continuing to pursue the goal of zero waste. It’s plastic free July but preserving the future is a forever job.

See you then

This Week in the kitchen

Holy Cow

This week Holy Cow has more skim milk. We've been trialing this over the past few weeks and found there is a customer base, so when supply allows, we will be bringing this to the market.

Yoghurt has also been incredibly popular so we have 30 liters to sell to all of you on Saturday.

Milk production at the farm is still low with us still being a mighty bit chilly currently, approximately 100 liters per day, so our selection of products and quantities are limited and if you want to make sure you get them you will need to get in early.

This week we have:

  • Skim Milk
  • Full Fat Milk
  • Cream
  • Yoghurt

Steamer Basin Brewing

After trying it in a saison last year, we’ve made a Elderberry Sour from this summer’s crop. And with a blend of Belgian yeast and bacterial strains, it carries a clean sourness and hint of elder perfume.

Enjoy now or save for later as it ages in the bottle.

Dunford Grove

mt piza.jpg

Seems each morning brings the snow a little lower down the Pisa Range!  Mt Pisa is 1860m and we're at about 180m elevation so a bit more needed before we dig out the snow chains.

Did you know?

We’ve all read the many health benefits of the Mediterranean diet, but the newest study found that the diet may help protect against air pollution. Of course, finding ways to reduce air pollution is also important, but it helps to know that we can maximize our protection against the inevitable air pollution we come in contact with through a healthy diet. So, load up on vegetables, fruit, olive oil (choose organic, cold-pressed varieties ), whole grains, legumes. Dunford Grove Olive Oil is cold pressed, organically grown and very high in Polyphenols!

Selwyn at the market this week sharpening.

Selwyn Shanks is back at the market this week sharpening all your pruning tools and firewood cutting tools, as well as scissors, knives and other everyday tools.

He will not be there in November so don't put it off!

Just visit his stall at the north end of the platform. Please be mindful how you transport your sharp objects.
