This Week at the Farmers Market

12th March 2022

Hi there

z Celebrating NFMW .png (1)

Otago Farmers Market joins many authentic farmers’ markets around the country to celebrate National Farmers’ Market Week this week from 12-20th March.  A nationwide celebration to highlight the importance of farmers’ markets in our communities. Over the past year the pandemic made it clear that local food systems with short supply chains are resilient and farmers’ markets play a vital role in keeping our community connected & fed.  We wouldn’t be able to continue to operate without our amazing team of Market vendors, Market volunteers (including our board of trustees), Market staff & you our Market customers & community, so thank you!  Being an authentic farmers’ market, means we only source food from the local wider region & only sell food related products & produce meaning you are supporting the local region & of course everything is fresher as you are eating in season.  Speaking of which, there is still plenty of the summer lines of strawberries & stone fruit, etc available along with all the new season pip fruit & the autumn varieties of vege’s.  Buying your groceries at a farmers’ market more often than not proves gentler on the purse as you are buying directly from the growers, the farmers & the producers but also getting a premium product.  A win, win for everyone.

Hopefully you are doing ok, I know many of you are having to isolate or are running around for those that are.  Please stay home if you are unwell or are a positive case.  Please wear your masks (unless exempt). Please keep your distance.  And buy for a friend!  It was great to see so many students out & about again in the sunshine at the Market last weekend.  And for those of you stuck at home we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Waitaki Orchard, Princes St Butchery & others.  All their details you can find on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times.  Do your shop & then grab a coffee & brunch on the way out to takeaway.  Shop & go will also avoid any queuing & keep distancing safer in our outdoor Market so everyone can shop easily.  And remember that we have a wonderful selection of specialist vendors up on the platform to check out as well.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product while you all respect 1mt distancing between each other & Market stalls.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  Take care of each other & thanks for supporting local where you can.

This Week in the kitchen

I was having a look through our archives for recipes this week and saw this stand out Apple, Plum, and Date cake. Simple ingredients and all easily found from our fantastic vendors at the Otago Farmers Market. This is the perfect dessert to follow the Potato & Silverbeet Quiche and our simple Southern Slaw. I am looking forward to giving these a go later this weekend!  Bella (Assistant Manager)
