This Week at the Market

12th September 2020

Hi there

Lebanese Cuisine Afife Harris.jpg

There is no one quite like Afife Harris, owner/operator of Lebanese Cuisine. Afife came to New Zealand 25 or so years ago from Lebanon and has made an indelible mark on Dunedin and the people who live here. Her passion is about helping others and she has selflessly gone about doing that the whole time she has been here. Whether she is organising car boot sales to raise money for driving lessons for Syrian refuges, co-ordinating and writing cook books, teaching how to cook Lebanese food, facilitating multi cultural women’s groups or just simply donating any excess food left over after the market to those that need it.  She is a dynamic force of a woman who gets things done and, as such, is a huge asset to our city and farmers market.

Afife has been a vendor at the farmers market since 2006. She began with just three dishes – hummus, tabbouleh and falafel – but now has 9 or 10 different dishes on offer ranging from the well known to her special Eggplant and Pomegranate Molasses special dish! Everything is made from scratch and we get to taste divine Turkish Delight, Dolmas, Katafi and Baklava, Mamoual, Borek, Fattier, Labneh and different salads and dips.

Afife is a Dunedin legend and her stall is not to be missed at the market. Be sure to go by and say hi.

Coastal Kaps will be at the market this week with their oyster mushrooms. These get snapped up as they are so picture perfect and tasty. You will find them up on the platform.

We are expecting a beautiful day on Saturday, so gather up your shopping bags and head down to restock the pantry for the week. There will be lots of pretty Spring flowers for sale as well! Bonus!

Kind Regards

Kate

This Week in the kitchen

Look out for the NZ Nut Van at the market on Saturday 19 September – there will be a full range of in-shell walnut cultivars and bags from 500gm to bulk purchases along with walnut halves and pieces.  Now is your opportunity to collect Vina, Hartley, Franquette and Tehama walnuts and garlic.

Valda apologises that for health reasons she has had a significant break from the market – but it is good that Tim Muller will be down selling walnuts.  Payment can be by electronic transfer or cash.

Doubt Not Compost!

Issac with shovel.jpg

Issac from Doubt Not Compost here in Dunedin will be back at the Market this weekend.   Issac manages our market recycling waste & will be at the market this weekend selling a few cuttings grown in the potting blend they make from local hospo waste.  Have a chat to him if you need ideas on your own composting system at home. The hard work hard they do for the market & for Dunedin is inspiring!  Hit him up for composting tips & loads of other stuff!

Locavore Boxes to your Door!

locovores 2.jpg (1)

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:

Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz
