This Week at the Farmers Market

13th February 2021

Hi there

Revo Salad Citizens .jpeg (1)

Our Waitangi Day market was pumping!  With so many of you enjoying the day, lots of new faces & out of town visitors; it felt good to be amongst it.  We are lucky in our region to have such an abundance of Otago stone fruit at the market, a gorgeous hue of apricot with all the peaches, nectarines, apricots, greengage plums (green) & all from Willowbrook, Rosedale, Ettrick, Waitaki & Earnscleugh Orchards, so good!

Josh Clarke and Katie Ellwood have been bringing great food to the people for many years. However, in the current iteration of their hospitality careers, Citizens Catering, they really are bringing great food to the community via their two food trucks. Coming to a location near you, this business really works social media, to let people know where and when they can get their next fix of great street food. They take their food trucks into communities and encourage families to get out of their houses, meet their neighbours and enjoy picnics in local green spaces.

Josh has worked as a chef for many of the great chefs around the world. He started cooking at 14 and became a chef at 16. He loves the precision and passion of working in fine dining, Michelin rated restaurants and the discipline the work requires. However, the stress and long hours meant it was never going to be a long-term career choice for him.

Fast forward many years and Katie and Josh came to Dunedin where Katie had grown up. They saw potential in Ombrellos, bought it and never looked back. At Ombrellos they embraced the burgeoning craft beer trend, served excellent locally based food and had a strong ethos of great service. The café/bar became a firm favourite in Dunedin.

Not ones to rest on their laurels, they saw the potential in the food truck business and thought that they could produce food out of a truck that was as good, if not better, than cafes and restaurants. Their distinctive, custom fitted, black ambulance and clever branding hit the streets and communities of Dunedin and local events. More recently, they bought a second truck.

Their food is fresh, tasty, made from scratch and incorporates local ingredients wherever possible.

If you are looking for Kapowai Brewing kombucha, they are now up on the platform in the refreshment & beverage aisle!  (Near No.8 Distillery, Ronia & Pippi, Urbn Vino & Caitlins True Brew).  Bring your Kapowai bottles back, to refill at the refill station. Varieties change out each week, and are always refreshing!  A delightful section of the Market.

And lastly thinking of our friends up in Waikouaiti & Karitane this week, while they wait for some answers.

See you on Saturday….

Ngā mihi

Michele

NZ Nuts This Weekend

hazelnuts and walnuts.jpg

Valda welcomes Olivia who will be working on the stall commencing this week.  Olivia is a second-year master’s in nutrition student – we are very pleased that she has chosen to spend some time with us on Saturdays. Please make her welcome. Valda will be back at the market some weeks – but is also taking some time back on the farm getting ready for the harvest season. There is a backlog of ‘must be done’ jobs including a most important new canopy for the walnut harvester… perish the thought of not having that ready!!  I’ll miss my regular trips to the market but as the crop expands I need to be practical.  It might be that we are trading under the yellow canopy some weeks and the green canopy and van other weeks – but we will be in the same place so don’t think it is somebody else!!

This week we have the French Prunes back to the market along with in-shell Vina walnuts, halves, and pieces. And before too long there will be the hazelnuts, chestnuts, and almonds. The year already seems to be rolling on so quickly!
