This Week at the Farmers Market

14th January 2023

Hi there

Rodger Santa 2022 Christmas.jpg

Happy new year!  Hopefully you had a few days off to refresh & reset for 2023. We have already had a bumper start to the Market this year with lots of visitors and the Christmas Market saw thousands of you descend very early to fill up the whole Market within minutes in the pouring rain to get your festive groceries.  I foolishly (in all the excitement) in my rain soaked steamed up reading glasses, hit slow-mo instead of timelapse on my old iphone while filming you all file in on mass & now I can’t get this huge file off the phone to share it yet – but it felt buzzy to be amongst it! Thanks for turning out in volume and supporting us and hopefully you got most of what you wanted for your table, picnic or BBQ.

The Market will be heaving with Central Otago stone fruit again this weekend.  Rosedale Orchard & Earnscleugh Co-op Orchards have lots of varieties available in their usual spots.  Big Fat Cherry will be back up again this week on the platform at the South gate, Willowbrook Orchard have bulk lots of apricots for processing available and Waitaki Orchards have sundrop apricots coming off the trees. Peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries & apricot’s – what’s not to love about summer in the south with these guys!  (Apart from all the rain lately).  Agreeable Nature Free Range Eggs will be bringing as much as they can this week – they are always popular but it’s now next level demand! Also, Waikouaiti Gardens have organic eggs available.  Chinese Crepe are away for the next little bit along with Bagelo’s, but all your favourite brunch places are available this weekend – La Crepe, Abdal’s, Slice of Heaven, Bacon Buttie, Marie’s and Boden Deli, Juiced Up, Silk Rd, Jia He, coKo Lounge, GUD & Classic Coffee carts and other options.

Exciting Market bubba news! Esther from Company of Flowers has had a little girl over the new year & her stall will be back in action on 21st January with family & partner Jamie help on the day.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (veg boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you Saturday.

This Week in the kitchen

The festive season has come to an end, but that doesnt mean the sweet treats made from Market produce stop! This rhubarb cake is a great option for those that are gluten free, or feeding someone else who is! I love to make a slaw like this at the start of the week and add it to meals as the week goes by, saving time. Isabella (Assistant Manager)

We will be back at the Market from this Saturday onwards.

We’ve been up in Central Otago enjoying the sun and river swims, but also harvesting St Johns Wort for our Golden Skin Oil and Mood Boost at Bannockburn.

St. John's wort (Hypericum perforatum) is often called liquid sunshine. It's well-known for supporting low mood and most people are also aware that it should be avoided for people on long-term meds.

Did you also know that St. John's wort...

-Is a nerve-insulator, working on both the nervous system and physical nerves.

-Has been shown in 30+ clinical studies to be as effective as common antidepressants.

-Compared to a placebo 2/3 of people taking St. John's wort reported a decrease in their anxious feelings and low mood.

We think it is truly nature's sunshine!

We are running some specials to kick off 2023

  • Mood Boost for $50 (usually 54.95)
  • Back to School & Work Combo pack (Rest and Calm and Defence Elixir) for $50 usually $69.90

Happy New Year people! I hope this finds you well, and looking forward not back!

Here we’re looking at fruit set, just to give us a handle on the year’s crop.  Not looking too bad so far, now we wait for the sun to do its best!

Did you know?  Once our Extra Virgin Olive Oil is in the bottle the very last thing it needs is direct sunlight.  Please keep your oils in a cool, dark place (not refrigerated).

Hazelnut Estate

Shoo-Fly (Nicandra physalodes)

The lavender cup-shaped flowers appear in summer above the dark green leaves and the inflated green-purple calyx which encases the unappetizing poisonous fruit, which can be dried and used in floral arrangements. This annual seems to be pretty hardy, hailing from South America, and it is from the Solenaceae family (think deadly nightshade).

It is suggested to be used as a companion plant as it helps to deter whitefly (and other flying bugs) from the glasshouse or Vege garden. The ‘juice’ of the plant can be mixed with milk, the shoo-fly juice-infused milk then attracts and kills flies – hence the name!

In some parts of the world, a decoction of the leaves is used to treat head lice and supposedly in the southern US it is known for rubbing the leaves on people's skin as a fly repellant. While it is deadly to whitefly, head lice and houseflies, its blue flowers are not deadly to beneficial bees or butterflies! Easy to grow in full sun. Annual. Ht 60-80cm

Please note that this plant is NOT TO BE INGESTED and can cause skin irritations in some. Kate
