This Week at the Farmers Market

14th May 2022

Hi there

Hope everyone is managing well this week.  We look forward to seeing more new faces from out of town as another graduation rolls around this weekend, I enjoyed last weekend’s grad and if you are lucky enough to be attending this weekend, you can always find great coffee from 7am at the Market for the early birds (we officially open at 8am for brunch & shopping) - mask use is encouraged.

Apples are still excellent eating & we have such a fantastic array of varieties at an even more fantastic prices at around $2.80kg + super crunchy & fresh!  Lian at Waewae Permaculture will be back next weekend but there will be plenty of fresh vege supplies from our hardworking market gardeners & growers.

Be sure to catch Country Calendar on Sunday night on TV1 – Dave from Blueskin Bay Honey features. Country Calendar has always been a favourite series of mine & it’s always great to see the farmers markets around the country appearing in many episodes.

If anyone happened to find a treasured engagement ring with a large blue sapphire surrounded by diamonds in a gold band last weekend at the Market, one of our vendors’ 81year old mother may have lost it there, we would love to hear from you if you find it.

For those of you who maybe isolating or housebound, we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  All their contact details you can find on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz under vendors.

Our board of trustees are looking for expressions of interest from people passionate about the Market who feel that they would have something to offer around governance. Recently Pat Johnston stepped down after many years being on the board and then as an advisor contributing much to the OFMT. Kitty Caldwell & Jeremy Anderson stepped away last year (but they all still volunteer in the caravan from time to time & are keen shoppers at the Market) - they contributed a wealth of knowledge behind the scenes over many years.  We welcomed Professor Sheila Skeaff & long-time vendor Rod Philip (Asparagus Man!) in recent times.  The Trust meet on a monthly basis and are responsible for assessing new applications to trade at the market and the strategic direction of the market. Please send expressions of interest to Sharyn Crawford, Chair of the Trust at chair@otagofarmersmarket.org.nz  We would be looking at bringing onboard an Advisor and a Trustee (someone with the right skill set & commitment in these voluntary roles would be required).  Our advisors come from a broad range of backgrounds and contribute to the discussion around the monthly meeting table but do not have voting rights & Trustees have voting rights.  Should you be interested contact, Sharyn for a confidential discussion.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. We have lots of brunch options to dine in outside & some of our vendors have samples for you to try before you buy.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies & fruit & even bread.  Most vendors are more than happy to fill your containers.

We encourage mask use & respecting everyone’s space within the Market while we still have high cases in the region.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  And take care of one another.

This Week in the kitchen

This week I finally gave into the fast approaching Dunedin Winter by wearing triple layers around the flat and woollen socks. Our flat meals have also evolved into predominantly soups, casseroles, and roasts. With that in mind, I searched the archives for comfort food this week that help take the winter chill off. This fish Escabeche has the perfect level of spice to do just that! Bella (Assistant Manager)

John will be down at Market to greet everyone (like fellow vendor Donald Butler in the photo, other vendors and the public) who've all become friends since he first joined the Otago Farmers Team of traders in 2003 (almost 20 yrs ago!).  For many years living on Willowbrook was a prune, thin, pick, pack fruit in boxes and send to various local markets to be resold to businesses and the public with no opportunity to meet the "at home customers" who bought and enjoyed the fruit from Willowbrook. From Day One at the Farmers Market that all changed. It became one of the big pluses finally having contact with customers (along with others of course too- especially getting up at 3 am to drive there 😉😊). This week he'll be there ready to talk Apples, Pears to fill your kitchen needs - he will be bringing a lot of varieties to choose from & can advise what ones are good for what 🚛🍎🍏🍐 Have a fruitful weekend friends!

NZ Nuts Are Back!

hazelnuts and walnuts.jpg (1)

It feels like a long break since we were in the market, but we had sold out before the spring and had to wait for the next harvest - we are really looking forward to joining you again.

We will start with a "bang" with most walnut cultivars (Franquette, Vina and Hartley) in the shell (Gold and standard) as well as halves and pieces along with chestnuts and almonds and some quince.  To celebrate being back at the market all customers will be given a bag of chestnuts to enjoy! This is a one week only special.

Unfortunately, I am immune-compromised and unable to come down to the market - and there is no doubt some customers will be in the same position - if you would appreciate nuts delivered to your door in Dunedin please email nuts@nznuts.co.nz and I will send you an order form for nuts.  Tim (our son) will be on the stand the first week then joined by Emma who will do the following weeks.

So lookout for the market van with the green canopy this week ..... we have a great supply of organically certified nuts (OFNZ3910). All walnuts are grafted on the property from export quality North American and European cultivars.

Best wishes to my market friends.  Valda Muller
