This Week at the Farmers Market

15th January 2022

Hi there

We had a great buzzy Market last weekend with many out-of-town visitors & also many locals on holiday who hadn’t been for ages but made the most of it while they had free time.  It certainly had that holiday vibe, long may these Markets last!  I heard one man desperate to get his Bacon Buttie hit (after 7 years away in the UK & no doubt a week or two in MIQ) but this weekend most vendors will be there to keep us happy.

Lots of berries of all varieties are now at Ettrick Gardens & strawberries are still at Caithness Farm (so sweet & juicy!) & Rodger at Janefield’s has strawberries for the early birds.   And the stone fruit is going great guns at Rosedale, Willowbrook, Waitaki & Earnscleugh Orchards – good to see apricots appearing more, I have yet to try as have been enjoying the sweet peaches & nectarines so far this summer.  Favourites finds last week – the smoked salmon & caper pate at Catlin’s Kitchen on the platform – oh my goodness, very good, if they have some this week, grab a jar – made with home smoked salmon.  Did you know that Run Rabbit do chickpea pasta? I’ve been enjoying their spaghetti version this week.  And sometimes we just need nudging out of our habitual comfort zone to find something else when our favourites have run out – I finally discovered Sage Evansdale Cheese after all these years of grabbing my usual Tania, Farmhouse or Cumin varieties.  The Sage might be my new go to.

I want to wish all the very best to the future for Paulina & Jose from Tunanopal Mexican as they concentrate on other life stuff, they have been wonderful vendors & just super lovely people & I'm going to miss their authentic dishes but I understand their decision.  They have been a wonderful addition to the Farmers Market last year & I know they were a favourite of many.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

Remember to bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

And a reminder that food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers.  Most of our vendors accept return jars & empty containers, etc from their products.  Re Use is the name of the game this year.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

This Week in the kitchen

Hoping you've had a short break/reprieve from the usual...but sadly that means getting back into it again! Luckily the delicious produce is coming in thick and fast at the moment, with all the beautiful berries and stone fruit in particular! YUM. I fossicked up some tasty recipes which I hope serve as an inspiration on different ways of using all our amazing vendors products, other than just eating them fresh - which frankly is pretty fantastic as well! Hello Picklelovers, I have been busy this week making new season Zucchini pickle using some gorgeous farmers market produce. I am even managing to add some homegrown this year.

I will be at the market this Saturday and back again on 5th Feb after a couple of weeks of family summer fun.  Make sure to stock up on your favourites, especially our Coriander & Coconut chutney. It freezes really well but if you are nervous about freezing the glass jar try putting spoonful’s in an ice cube tray instead. Coriander is limited at the moment, and I will only have 11 jars. Get in touch if you simply MUST have some and I’ll put it aside.

You will find our stall a bit further down the platform from now on, in Urbn Vino’s old spot.

After a bit of discussion with Michele, our Extra Virgin Olive Oil bottle refills are back!  Remember if you bring our bottle back clean and dry, we refill for $3 off.

Did you know?

The Greek poet Homer called Olive Oil “liquid gold” while Hippocrates, widely considered the father of medicine, referred to it as “the great healer.”  Not all olive oil is created equal.  Most of the celebrated health benefits associated with olive oil actually belong to a single grade: Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO)!

Hi Dunedin! We have some sad news, as of this weekend, Tunanopal won't be attending the market anymore.  We'll be focusing on our jobs as they demand most of our time and want to achieve our professional goals too. We are so thankful you let us be part of this amazing community, thanks to all the stallholders, everyone has been so welcoming and supportive, and also to everyone that has tried our food and tasted a bit of our food culture.  We've loved sharing these dishes with you and we'll miss you.

Thanks a lot! Paulina and Jose
