This Week at the Farmers Market

15th May 2021

Hi there

As I type up this week’s newsletter at the Market office desk overlooking the Countdown carpark, the sombre & shocking mood of this week is apparent.  My thoughts have been distracted & my heart goes out to all concerned including our fine city.

If you still need to get winter vegies growing in the garden Youth Grow have their last weekend of the season this week & will be back at the end of August, which I’m sure will come around mighty fast.

We welcome a new vendor this week – Daniel from Street Bowls, with vegan & gluten free bowls from his food truck.  He will be alternating week about with Slice of Heaven vegan pizza (in the cute mint green caravan named Sherilyn!).  You will find them up on the platform near Holy Cow.  Speaking of caravan's, have you checked out the new caravan at La Crepe?  Christophe has designed & handcrafted a real bespoke beauty even with little windows for children to view the crepe cooking magic in his La Chariotte!

Logan Park High School Jazz Band are back this weekend, always a popular band when they play.  No doubt we will see families of graduating students again this weekend stocking up the flat cupboards & sorting out brunch & coffee needs alongside lots of rugby fans in town.  All are welcome, we hope you enjoy.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

Look after one another & see you Saturday….

Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen

NZ Nuts This Weekend

IMG-2403.jpg

Autumn has finished with a flourish in Central Otago… the great weather, with no wind has allowed leaves to hang on the trees much longer and the colours have been more intense… beautiful.  Snow caps were on the Pisa Range on Tuesday morning... Winter is on its way.

Tim will be on the stall this week, with a full range of inshell walnuts, along with halves and pieces. I know some of you have been waiting for those!!  We also have chestnuts and almonds still available.

Best wishes and enjoy these final Autumn days.

Dunford Grove

Getting there!  A few more sunny days needed.  We harvest when we have 1/3 green olives, 1/3 black & 1/3 turning.  This gives a nice balance of flavour and a good oil yield.

Did you know?

Oil content in an olive acts a bit like anti-freeze, great for those nights when Dan says "Look at that high pressure, you know what that means!".

But not too cold Dan, we're OK down to about -2 degrees but any lower and we're frost fighting- makes for a pretty long day!  Cheers Sandy.

Mark & Lynley are waiting for their tomatoes to ripen, so they'll be back next weekend!
