Hi there
Crazy to think this time last year we were halfway through the first NZ lockdown & many of us were working from home, baking up a storm, zooming friends & family & the Market was only operating as a semi virtual market for the 6 or so weeks rather than our preferred weekly place to shop. Which brings me to think, now is the time to make the most of Saturday mornings while we have a full contingent of vendors before the seasonal growers start to disappear for the winter season & while we still have the last of the stone fruit & plenty of plum varieties & all...
Congrat’s to the No.8 Distillery boys on their bevy of medals this week, two silver medals for the Horopito and Dunners Dry and a bronze medal for the Hibiscus gin at the 2021 London Spirits competition. Hussey & Laredo had their 4year in business anniversary and Telagi our ever-trusty waste & recycling volunteer was named Volunteer of the Month by Volunteer South, we love his dedication to the Market (we are always on the lookout for other keen volunteers too). There is always something to celebrate within our Market community.
Zestt Wellness / Hammerheads have left the market to concentrate on other sides to the business, we wish them well, but Ernie will still be a regular shopper at the Market, can’t keep him away! We will be welcoming a few new vendors in the coming weeks, the ever-changing nature of the Market just like the seasons. You will hear more about them closer to the time... in the meantime Waitaki Orchard managed to do another pick in the orchard so they are back again this week & Tunanopal Mexican street food have a brand new 'local' menu, celebrating ingredients from the other vendors. I love the cross pollination /collab aspect of the Market, I see it all the time at the end of the Market as some trade & swap goods come pack up time, to create into all sorts of delicious array - see Tartan Sari's story & others.
The DCC will be engaging with the public at the community stall on Saturday so make sure your voice is heard on the 10yr draft plan for our great little city, they will be up on the platform.
Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!
See you at the Market.

We will be at 2 more markets only, until we are back in spring. During the slower season we only have capacity for our home delivery boxes. If you don't want to go without our lovely produce, talk to us about our set-price veggie boxes at the next market. If you live near our farm you can have veggies delivered, and a veggie box can be picked up from our farm if you are outside our delivery area. Thank you for all your support, encouragement, kind words and suggestions this season. We are expanding slowly and endeavor to be at the market longer each season.
Regenerative & Diverse farming, local & agri-chemical free. Organically grown (non-certified-talk to us!).

Have you ever tried Spicy Apple Pickle? You are in for a treat! We have been (im)patiently waiting for Autumn to arrive to get our hands on some delicious seasonal, NZ-grown Granny Smith apples, and fellow market vendors Rosedale Orchard have provided us with some of their sensational crop! We will be spending the next few weeks filling up the stock room with enough Apple Pickle to last us all until next autumn (hopefully!). We would love to give you a taste, come and see us on the platform this Saturday. We have EFTPOS!

NZ Nuts This Weekend
|
What a busy nutty week – with a few weather complications thrown in! Harvest is progressing well, and we are harvesting Franquette now, taking other cultivars out of the drying room, grading, and packing in shell nuts. It’s all go on the Nut Farm!!
This week you will find the following on the stall.
Walnuts – in shell Vina, (some halves and pieces for the early birds) and some Tahama
Almonds
Chestnuts – in 500g and 2kg bags (How to prepare chestnuts and ideas for their use in sweet and savoury dishes are included in the bags)
I will now be in the position to fill bulk orders, but it would be useful if you could advise me of what you need so that I can arrange to have them in the market at a time that suits you. Email nznut1@xtra.co.nz
I have just finished participating in a Skype conference call presenting the Organic Sector Market Report for 2020 and looking towards the future of the organic sector... over a hundred participants NZ wide, videos of international speakers and a lot of energy “in the room” to how to best champion organic production and meet food needs in the future. The Organic Products Bill is currently before parliament – a lot of work to be done! Email me if you are interested in the link to these discussions.
Best wishes to each of the Otago Farmers Market customers – thank you for supporting us on our organic journey!

Dunford Grove

Well bugger! We had a bit of wind. This tree was part of a hedge and reasonably sheltered but… fortunately, the trees in the grove came through almost unscathed.

This week was spent recycling & sterilizing my jars. I use recycled jars to bottle my fermented vegetables and my gourmet low sugar jam. A special thanks to all of you who bring me back the jars, it is so helpful, as if I don’t have enough jars, I have to go and find them in recycling bins, which take a lot of time and energy. I always need more jars and especially the 380/400g.
Our Banoffee Pancake $8 (made with date butterscotch, vegan custard, and fresh banana) was a success: so delicious!! It will stay on the menu for every Saturday treat, come to have a try, but be careful, you might get addicted!

Gate Collection - RSA Poppy Appeal
|
The RSA Poppy Appeal is New Zealand’s longest running charity appeal. And will be at the gates collecting at the Market this weekend. In 2021 we have chosen to highlight the experiences of women and the military, that’s both women in uniform and those women who watch their sons, daughters, husbands or lovers depart and have the daily angst of never knowing if they will return. Please take some time to read their stories and gain insight into their experiences at the RSA website.
The annual Poppy Appeal is the primary source of funds for the RSA’s extensive provision of support services to the service community.
