Hi there
The silly season is well & truly here as most of you count down the days till a bit of a break hopefully, Christmas, summer days or just plain getting through the last of this 2022 - wishing you all well to get there!
This weekend we will see Donald from Butlers Berries with freshly picked raspberries along with Chris & Viv from Kakanui Produce with their popular bounty, Rosedale Orchard will have the first of the NEW season stonefruit - peaches, apricot’s and necatarines! Likewise Willowbrook Orchard are hoping to be picking the stonefruit for this weekend too. Big Fat Cherry will be there as well, (I know many of you have been asking). The Mosgiel Brass Band will be back again for carols and you will see lots of great Christmassy fare, produce gift idea's and food for your celebrations. Swing by the caravan again this weekend as Chef Amy might have some sweet treats for you again in the Market Kitchen to eat as I have organised her to cook up a big batch of Christmas chocolate brownie for morning tea for our hard working vendors, she'll make plenty for our wonderful customers as well.
I had my first Christmas fruit tart of the season from Gilbert’s on Saturday which was melt in your mouth delicious – my order is already in for Christmas day, be in quick. And how pretty are these Christmas cookies in the header crafted by Lesya from Dolce Vita. Be sure to get your Christmas drinks sorted this weekend for any Central Otago organic wines, as this is Judge Rock’s last weekend pre. I’ve got my bottle chilling in the fridge already of Guilty Pét-Nat 2021, a naturally fermenting rosé juice -it’s known to a bit of a party in your mouth kind of drink which sounds like fun.
Congratulations to all the graduates again this week – we saw many of you on Saturday morning buying up posies & bouquets and we look forward to more of you and your families this weekend. Be sure to grab a coffee and a bite to eat before your parade. Abdal’s do a great tasty Saj wrap pizza for something on the go, Juiced Up do the most delicious fresh green lemonade I have tried (take a jar or your keep cup for them to fill – I took a clean peanut butter jar last weekend which was perfect to shake, stroll & enjoy) – find them up on the north end of the platform.
If you are looking for a very special gift idea, then I’m going to let you be first to know what we are planning for 2023! It’s our 20th birthday celebrations next year from March & we are planning a fabulous Otago Farmers Market Long Lunch along the Railway Platform on Sunday 26th March. Precinct Food will be creating a 3-course feast from the Market bounty of produce & products. Tickets can be brought now in this link. There will only be seating for 150 lucky guests at the long, long table, so gather your friends or family and any foodies in your life. See details below in the newsletter to get yours. Nicola McConnell from Dine Dunedin, etc will be managing this exclusive event for us, thought I would let you know now for those planning their late summer calendar schedule or those wanting a significant gift voucher idea.
Don’t forget that the best way to help those in need right now is to contribute to the Kiwi Harvest Crate by the Market caravan. The wonderful team at Kiwi Harvest collect from there & from our Market vendors each Saturday lunchtime and then it’s distributed to local charities who make sure it gets to the right communities in need. This is their last collection pre-Christmas from the Market.
For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the week, Brightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (veg boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others. You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz
Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. And remember your containers, produce bags, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.
Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval. Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.
Not long to go now! Our Christmas Market lands on Saturday 24th December this year and will be an early 6:30am – 11am one, we will lock off gates till opening this year - which always creates a frenzied rush of shoppers for Christmas day supplies & customers wanting coffee & brunch. The following Market is then New Year’s Eve morning Saturday 31st December – there are no extra markets over the festive period, just all the usual Saturdays so nice & straight forward.
Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.
Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market! See you Saturday. And thank you as always for supporting us this year, I know we all love having you at the Market.

French (Artemisia dranculus) v. Texas Tarragon (Tagetes lucida)
French Tarragon is said to have the most refined flavour, indispensable to french cooking, however, this plant can be finicky about where it grows and it needs protection during winter. Many believe the challenge of growing it is worthwhile for the unique flavour! Best used fresh or persevered in vinegar as the flavour is lost when leaves are dried.
Texas Tarragon is a smaller perennial and a completely different genus but is a hardier and easier-to-grow plant that smells and tastes like french tarragon with the classic anise and liquorice flavours - possibly sweeter? Both the leaves and flowers of this plant can be used when you wish to add the classic tarragon flavour to dishes, including salads. Both plants can be used as substitutes for each other culinary-wise in either French or South American cuisine.
Medically French Tarragon leaves were once used to help cure scurvy, 'sweeten' one's breath, and it can have a soporific effect on some whereas an infusion was used to help as an appetite stimulant and digestive tonic. The roots were once used to help 'cure' toothache! This plant needs shelter in a warm location in full sun (but not too bright!) during the growing season and needs 'inside' shelter during winter here in the south!
Texas Tarragon (Sweet Mace) was originally used by the Aztecs to flavour chocolate. It was also used to treat stomach aches, nausea, colds and fevers. In cooking, it was/is used in meat dishes as well as with eggs. Ideally, pick before flowers appear for the most intense flavour. Hardy plant that can tolerate full sun and is drought tolerant. However, shelter is needed in winter. Kate
