This Week at the Market

17th October 2020

Hi there

Spring is cantering along with its usual frisky, 4 seasons in one day, approach!. Once we hit Labour weekend it feels as though momentum picks up and we gallop towards Christmas and the holiday period. It’s all a bit exhausting so what better way to relax than a bit of peaceful gardening.

Now is the time to be weeding, planting and mulching vegetable gardens. Plant vendors at the market have a superb variety of seedlings for you to chose from so don’t be shy ask them for tips on growing for your local area and what plants will do best.

Ornamental gardens are also putting on rapid growth. The early spring bulbs have finished but we can expect those blooming, gorgeous paeony flowers to be making an appearance at the market very soon and then it will be coming up roses and sweet peas.

See you Saturday

Dunford Grove are Back!

Olives NZ Gala Awards dinner last Saturday, I donned a tie and felt a bit like a galah!  We just entered our 2020 EVOO this year and came away with a Silver Award.

I'll be back with you on the platform this Saturday so come along and try the winning oil.

Did you know?

This country's biggest resource is right under our feet!  That first 100-200mm of soil is what supports all life other than in the sea.  We say our property is "spray free" but we should be saying "nasty spray free"!  We've embarked on an organic seaweed nutrient spray program to lift soil carbon levels, particularly the complex carbon molecules that are the raft for plant health.

Spare Cups for our Cup Library?

coffee cup library.jpg

Our Market goers love our cup library & so do we!  But stocks have depleted.  If you borrowed a cup in the past & took it home by mistake, then remembering  to bring it back to the market this week would be fantastic!  Or if you have a few spare mugs at home (not chipped please) that you think would be useful then please bring them by the market caravan on Saturday morning.  Please drop them to us in the caravan (not directly back onto the cup library as we steralize first).  And for those of you that forget to bring a keep cup with you for your morning coffee, hot chocolate or fresh juice at the market our cup library can be found at the main middle gate as you walk in.

Locavore Boxes to your Door!

locovores 2.jpg (1)

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:

Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz

Community Stall - Logan Park High School Adventure Race Team

Logan Park High School Comm Stall .JPG

Logan Park High School Adventure Race team recently won the Otago/Southland Junior Get 2 Go Challenge run by Hillary Outdoors.  We are off to Great Barrier Island in December to compete in the National event.  Our group is fundraising to raise the $10000 we need to attend.  Pop by our stall to pick up a flyer on how to make a donation or to book a young person to do some chores like gardening or stacking firewood.

Blind Week Street Collection

Low Vision Street Appeal Blind Week.jpg

Blind Week is the time of year when we celebrate New Zealanders with vision loss living their lives without limits. It’s an opportunity for people to share their stories, and inspire others to do the same.

Today at least three more New Zealanders will be told they’re losing their sight. The aim of Blind Low Vision NZ is to provide practical and emotional support to these people, enabling them to face their future with confidence.

With your help this Blind Week, we can reach more people in your community who are blind, deafblind, or have low vision.

The Blind Week street collection is on Friday 16 and Saturday 17 October 2020.
