I am looking forward to getting back to the market this weekend to stock up on apples. Last week I got a big bag and stewed them. My flatmates and I have been eating apple crumble every night since! One of my favourte parts of the market is looking at the great outfits our customers come up with. This photo was take at the past Saturday Market! Not great for my shopping problem though!

Looking forward to seeing everyone there this weekend and hoping the sun continues to show up!

Beetroot is a great long lasting vege in the fridge and goes well as either a main or dessert! We have been loving the Market beetroot in the flat for when we are doing roast vege salads and cake is next on our to cook list!

Hello, Picklelovers. It’s finally here.
Our new curry paste/marinade RECHARD MASALA. It’s great on everything; fish, meat, tofu, vegetables, feta, and even nuts!
I’ll have some spicy nuts for you to taste the flavour, and you will find that recipe in the new recipe booklet.
We will also have stock of everything else including heaps of our coriander chutney and seed crackers.
See you on Saturday, it looks like it’s going to be another lovely one!

Spring has sprung on the nut farm with the almond blocks in full blossom .... which of course also signals the start of threatening frosts and the frost fighting season! Prior to each major frost I spray the canopy with kelp tea (along with our other weed teas) and some valerian ..... both the kelp and the valerian give about -2C protection and we also under tree irrigate. When we protect the blossoms the bees can continue their work in the orchard and you can enjoy the almonds! Of course these strategies comply with our organic certification. 

I was interested to read recently that in Switzerland all food provided to schools, rest homes and hospitals must have a minimum of 50% of foods organically certified. This is reflective of global trends with increased interest in organic production and consumption of organic certified foods. In New Zealand MPI is working on the Organic Products Bill which will be considered by parliament again later this year. When implemented this bill will mean that any food items sold as organic will need to be from a property which is organically certified. Whilst this gives consumers certainty about claims made it has real implications for small producers as the cost of certification through some of the major providers eg. Bio Grow is beyond their means. However, Organic Farms NZ (OFNZ) provides a low cost and supportive environment for those wishing to transition to certification - the Otago branch (Otago Organics) also has an active associate membership with every few weeks a speaker, workshop or farm visit to support home gardeners or others with a keen focus on organic production. Spring is here with the promise of the new growth that live for, and survive on but, the calm of a high pressure weather system means you see some pretty wrung-out looking people who’ve been up half the night staving off frost. On the positive side, fabulous days follow these crisp mornings!

Did you know?  Entries have now closed for the 2022 NZ EVOO Awards, with an enthusiastic total of 152 entries received - not far off last year’s record of 165 entries. That means there is once again some serious competition for the major awards, including every producer’s goal, the Best in Show trophy.  Sandy
