This Week at the Farmers Market

Hi there

Hopefully you are managing to keep dry & warm this week.  Pat on the back, we have all made it to mid-year, meaning celebrations of the winter solstice next Tuesday & the start of the Matariki.  Hopefully you can get to join & enjoy family or friends at this time for warm kai or a drink (or brunch at the Market to catch up) over the next week or two, and perhaps see the other activities happening around town.  I know I haven’t done my usual mid-year Christmas / Matariki feasts for about 3 years now – funnily enough neither have you most likely!  You already know we have plenty of vegetables, whole fish (for those up really early) from Al at the Harbour Fish stall, meat (lamb at Princes St Butchery, venison at Blue Mountain Butchery or free ranged farm pork at Havoc amongst all their other cuts) & primary produce, etc to create some great meals.  Along with all the fancy condiments around the Market, & there are always plenty of sweet treats as well for dessert.

Congrats again!  No.8 Distillery with their latest trophy for their locally produced Ouzo named as in the Best in New Zealand Botanical & Other Spirits category, handcrafted right here in Ōtepoti. 

As usual we have lots of brunch options to dine in outside (or up on the platform undercover) & many of our vendors have samples for you to try before you buy. 

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies, fruit & even bread. Look out for our ReUse posters on vendors stalls on that can accept packaging back.

Thankfully harvest was over just before the polar blast!

We transport our oil back from the “press” in these stainless steel Fustis; 30, 50 and 75 litres each, the 75s were a mistake- just a bit too heavy to handle easily. We need to maintain 18 degrees in the room to allow any sediment to settle prior to racking off the oil, this process is repeated until the oil is completely clear.

Did you know?  We call the olive processing machinery a “press” but this is a salute to the extraction techniques of centuries past when the paste was layered between coir mats and subjected to serious pressure. It’s a slow and messy process. Today, the olives are crushed then enter the Malaxer, here the fruit is slowly agitated under gentle heat (28 degrees max) to release the oil. Oil is separated from the “paste” with a horizontal centrifuge. Sandy

Have you tried my gourmet low sugar jam? 

Most commercial jam contains 40 to 60% of sugar, my jam contains between 20 to 24% sugar, so it means more fruit and definitely more fruit flavour.  Less sugar is better for your health, so it is a double win. 

Most of the fruit I use for my jam, are from the farmer’s market or from my own garden (spray-free of course).

I will be up on the platform with a fresh batch of Limoncello, Peach liqueur, Pineapple Rum and the world's best contemporary Horopito Gin & so much more!  Julien
