This Week at the Market

18th October 2018

Hi there

Kara Cline.jpg

Labour weekend is renowned for BBQ’s, gardening and relaxation. And the very best way to kick it off is with a visit to the market to stock up on meaty delights, salad ingredients, nibbles and breads, beverages and seedlings. Treats are allowed on long weekends as well so splurge on your favourite market indulgence and you’ll be set for a fabulous weekend. I believe the weather will play ball as well. Woohoo bring it on!!

Also for those early birds amongst you we will have the first of this seasons strawberries!! Nothing says summer like these little beauties!!

Our waste educators do an amazing job, week in and week out, ensuring that the waste streams at the market don’t get contaminated. We would love more volunteers to help with this. Even if you could only commit to once a month it would make such a difference and give our incredibly loyal, small team a chance of the odd Saturday off. Please contact Kate on 0211 482 116 if you can help.

We love that you love our coffee cup library. However our ability to wash and sterilise the cups on Saturday is limited so we, of course, would prefer that you use your own keep cup or cup from home that you can then keep clean. Our wonderful library is just for when you forget your own.

This is the last week at the market that you will see our old trusty market kitchen and site office. Next week, 27th October, we intend to have our new food trailer at the market out of which will operate the kitchen and the office. We have further refinements (ie signage) to attend to but are super keen to see it in-situ so we can determine what is going to work best. As a result of the upgrade Butlers Berries will be located across the way beside Waitaki Bacon and Ham.

We have a new administrator, social media guru and part time duty manager at the market. Her name is Kara Cline, she hails from Tennessee, USA and she will become a more familiar face around the market once she gets her head around all the office procedures. Welcome Kara!!

See you Saturday

Kate

This Saturday we will be launching our new branding and bike trailer/market stand (with built in Peanut Butter on tap!). We are super excited to show you all what we have been up to. Our new 'labels' are fully reusable as we are constantly trying to find ways to reduce our waste. Along with the PB on tap we will be continuing to offer our jar swap discount when a clean jar is swapped for a new one. We sterilise and reuse all of our jars that are returned to us. We also are opening our new factory and cafe at 8 Roberts Street this Friday, feel free to come visit for some fresh PB on toast and locally roasted coffee!

Otago Organics are Taking a Break from the Market for this Saturday

The spring weather has not been kind recently and growing has been really slow. Also, for the first time ever, we have had a rabbit invader in one of our vegetable plots which nibbled away a whole row of our salad greens. With time for growing to catch up , we should be back at the market with a good range of our lovely spring produce next week.

FARMERS MARKET SPECIAL
Organic Kombucha
Candied Ginger & Rhubarb
750ml - $9
350ml -$4.50

Our special this week is Candied Ginger & Rhubarb Kombucha.
Rhubarb is one of those nostalgic flavours that reminds me of the puddings my Nanna used to make.
The sweet, tartness pairs well with kombucha, and we’ve added candied ginger for a little zing.
The rhubarb is fresh from Alice's garden at Otago Organics.

Kombucha On Tap
We’ll have Reishi Chai, and Blueberry & Cinnamon on tap this week.

Well, what a weekend! Olives New Zealand annual conference and awards evening. We'd been vacillating a bit on our oil blend so submitted two blends to the competition. This year saw the highest number of entries in the competitions history, a total of 115 over all categories. We submitted two and came away with a Silver, a Gold and Best in Class! A pretty exciting result. See you at the market this weekend with our award winning gold medal blend. Here are the judges tasting notes: "Green olives, tomato and artichoke aroma and flavour, excellent flavour transfer and clean fresh mouth feel, lingering bitterness and pungency with a warm spicy finish."

Did you know?
Extra Virgin Olive Oil is between 97 & 98% triglycerides (healthy fat) the remaining compounds and polyphenols are completely unique to Extra Virgin Olive Oil and contain all the flavour and health promoting properties we seek. Top among these are the antioxidants we all need and it is these that give an oil both bitterness and pungency.

Blind Week Appeal at the Gates this Week!

download.png

Blind Week is the time of year when we celebrate New Zealanders who are blind or have low vision living their lives without limits. It’s an opportunity for people to share their stories, and inspire others to do the same.

Today at least three more New Zealanders will be told that they are losing their sight. The aim of Blind Foundation is to provide practical and emotional support to these people, enabling them to face their future with confidence.

With your help this Blind Week, we can reach more people in your community who are blind or have low vision.

Stop by and say hello this Saturday!
