This Week at the Market

19th December 2019

Hi there

The countdown is on and we are super excited to be heading into the holiday period with two great markets between now and Christmas Day. This Saturday will be a massive market as we figure that many of you will be on leave from Friday and heading away to holiday destinations this weekend. A trip to the market to pick up all your food requirements is all that is between you and summer bliss. For those of us not heading away, Tuesday’s market at the earlier time of 6.30am and finishing at 10.30am will be a fun, festive, fresh  affair.

Take note that the car park to the north of the market  CANNOT  be used on Tuesday as they are leased parks Monday to Friday and therefore only available for leasees.

Both markets will have the best of the season available. The Big Fat Cherry Co will be there as will Frog Rock with wonderful cherries. Stone fruit of other varieties will be plentiful and berries of all sorts will beckon.

New potatoes, seasonal veg including fresh peas and courgettes, Holy Cow cream, meats of all sorts, wine, beer, last minute gifts, cheese, baked goods all will be plentiful. It is the season to be jolly and show kindness to all folks so please be patient and enjoy all the great music we will have on offer and the market ambiance.

Be sure to check out the merchandise we have for sale in the market hub. Our new tea towels are flying out the door and market vouchers are also really great gifts to give.

The market continues every Saturday throughout the holiday season. It is a great place to bring friends and family visiting from elsewhere to show off the best of the region and to enjoy Central Otago stone fruit.

Take care out their peeps and have a very enjoyable holiday season from us all here at the market. Thanks for your continual support and patronage of our wonderful market.

See you Saturday

Marie’s

Dear Customers,

I use to be part of La Crepe stall but after doing it for 14 years I feel I need a change.  So here I am back at the OFM, with a range of new products.

My aim is to bring some seasonal products (organic and non-organic) onto your plate adding value to wonderful Otago Farmers Market produce and along the way offering you some unique tastes.

Special this Week:

Fermented Vegetables (sampling available)

*Raw Sauerkraut

*Kimchi (mild and medium)

*Asparagus, Cabbage, Broccoli, broccoflower, pumpkin, radish, dill & ginger

*Cabbage, corn, carrot, beetroot, capsicum, cauliflower, pumpkin & cumin

*Cabbage, Jerusalem artichoke, turmeric & curry spices (mild)

Organic Chickpea Tempeh

This product is traditional from Indonesia and is originally made from fermented soy beans.

Mine will be made with all sorts of beans, grains and seed.

Low Sugar Jam (more fruit and less sugar, sweet enough but not too sweet. These jams are so yummy!).

Blueberry, Rhubarb, Peach, Plum.

You can find me on the platform, welcome to this new adventure!

I look forward to seeing you this Saturday (I will not come for the Tuesday-Christmas market).

Marie

A big thank you to all clients and friends.  It's been another fabulous year for our little enterprise and this is down to you all.

Please accept our best wishes to you and yours for the season; enjoy, celebrate, stay safe and keep well oiled!

Did you know?

In 1995, evidence of large-scale Mesolithic nut processing, some 9,000 years old, was found in a midden pit on the island of Colonsay in Scotland. The evidence consists of a large, shallow pit full of the remains of hundreds of thousands of burned hazelnut shells.

Now known as Abdal's Gourmet Foods.

Otago Organics

Edable Salad.jpg

As we will not be at the market on 24th December, Saturday will be our last market before Christmas. However all our products will keep well until Christmas. Our salad mixes with edible flowers will keep up to a week in the fridge, if sealed well. Summer meals, including those on Christmas day just cry out for salad and our mixes are ideal as a centre piece and are quick and easy way to impress friends and family. Just wash the salad greens, arrange on a dish and top with the flowers. As a Christmas special we will provide extra flowers on request while stocks last. We can also package the flowers separately in one of our compostable cellophane bags for extended keeping, if you wish.

We will also have plenty of broad beans as well as Globe Artichokes and heaps of bunched herbs, including mint and sage - the Christmas staples. Perhaps try one of our mixed bunches which include, bay, sage, thyme, oregano, and rosemary. Perfect for Christmas stuffing, or for hanging and drying in the kitchen.

If you want a last minute stocking filler, try a package of our herb tea. These are different and pretty, as many feature dried roses as an ingredient. We also have dried roses for cooking in very attractive glass or cellophane packages. These have been specially prepared to remove any bitter flavour and come with a recipe booklet attached.

Roses are our trademark. Look for me wearing my rose decorated market hat.

Best wishes for a great holiday season,

Alice Baird
