This Week at the Farmers Market

19th February 2022

Hi there

Willowbrook Rosedale .jpeg

No doubt another busy weekend ahead with parents in town settling students in.  We have plenty of reasonably priced freshly picked fruit, vegies & all supplies for the flats & households around town.  Be sure to grab your coffee & tasty brunch take outs to go on your way out (as we have no eating or drinking within the Market).  And you have to try our legendary Central Otago Apricots, Peaches & other stone fruit!  Everyone is welcome (vaccination passes are not required) so long as you are masked, scan in & keep 1mt distancing so everyone can shop safely please.

This week I have been enjoying these Oratia Beauties in my fruit bowl at home (a heritage breed of apples) from Simon at Rosedale Orchard & check out the blush on these Summerland Apricots – an old variety only available for a few weeks at Willowbrook Orchard - ask Pete & John who also have freshly picked fantasia nectarines & omega plums this week.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers.  Most of our vendors accept clean return jars & empty containers, etc from their products. We are currently running a sustainability survey with our vendors & I would love to see more customers make use of re-using & recycling containers back to our vendors (strawberry containers, plant pots, jars, bottles, etc).   It seems such a cost to our vendors to keep topping up & a cost to the environment not to return them.  Keeping this circular economy going works well when we all remember.  I know some of you are brilliant at always remembering & I know I feel good when I do those little things myself, it just makes sense really. Most of our vendors are happy to accept their packaging back if it can be re-used safely (especially containers, egg cartons, jars, fruit buckets -ie: Willowbrook Orchard, bottles, fruit containers, etc).

Food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times.  Do your shop & then grab a coffee & brunch on the way out to takeaway (there's always the garden outside the Railway Building for a picnic).  Shop & go will also avoid any queuing & keep a safe distance in our outdoor Market so everyone can shop.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

We have Otago Farmers Market bags to purchase at the black caravan at entrance which are $6 or $7 cash only, guaranteed to last for years & they hold heaps!

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product while you all respect 1mt distancing between each other & Market stalls.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  Take care of each other & see you Saturday & as always, thanks for supporting local.

Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen

AROOOOOOO this is my last we recipe introduction as I sign over my Assistant Manager duties to the awesome Bella. My last recipe archive dive and I've been holding onto this BBQ rib one fore a while! YUM. It's sweet as sweetcorn season and they will go perfectly with the ribs and potato salad, or in these yummy frittatas.  Get the amazing Otago produce from our incredible vendors, who I will miss, but not really because they have me hooked on their harvests! We’re often asked for olive branches for weddings and arrangements, always happy to oblige.

Did you know?

The olive branch is a symbol of peace and friendship dating way back in ancient Greek mythology.  Great way to start a marriage!
