This Week at the Market

19th March 2020

Hi there

In these incredibly uncertain times it is reassuring to know that some things don’t change. At this point in time the market is still going ahead as an “essential service” and we have all the good stuff for you. Virtually all of our primary producers will be there so locally grown, fresh fruit and vegetables will be plentiful as will bread, eggs, honey, fish, meat, cheese, milk, treats etc etc. We are so fortunate that we are in full autumnal mode where produce is at its peak production in our part of the world.

The other thing to bear in mind is there is still time to get some vegetable seedlings in the ground. Silver beet, kale and Asian greens will all do well if planted now and will ensure a good supply of nutritious greens over the winter right in your very own garden! Our plant vendors will be very happy to consult with you on this.

It may seem a little non-essential at this crazy but wouldn’t it be uplifting for us all if we scoop the best market in the country award again! We would love to win for the third time but need you to vote for us. You have until the end of March but why wait, do it now and ask all your family members to do it as well. Everyone with an email address is eligible to vote. Click the link below to go right to it. https://mailchi.mp/marvellousmarketing/foodproducers-coast-peoples-choice-vote-2020

See you Saturday. Remember to use your common sense at the market, just one family or flat member should come down and move through the market being mindful of social distancing. There will be no tastings and we may see more fruit and veg bagged to avoid customers selecting from crates that others have selected from. Stay safe people. Hand sanitiser will be available from the market hub. Remember if you feel unwell please do not come to the market. Ask a friend or neighbour to do your shop for you.

Otago Organics

Louise bonne de jersey pear public domain.jpg

Otago Organics will be at the Market this this Week.

We will have lots of lovely fresh organic fruit, including; Coes Golden Drop and Black Doris plums, Hetlina Apples and beautiful Louise Bonne De Jersey Pears. This French pear from 1788 is crisp and sweet with a rosy skin and is my favourite pear to eat with cheese.

To protect everyone’s health this week we will be following the market’s rules. We will be the only ones touching the fruit and produce, with gloves on. A separate gloved person will handle your money. We will have more pre-packaged fruit than usual but will also be happy to weigh out what you want or fill your own container.

Our salad bags will be sealed and less out on display and we will also have our usual fresh herbs and dried products including teas available. New this week will be a range of dried packaged herbs. These are fresher and more tasty than the supermarket ones and will be great for the store cupboard and for winter cooking.

Just ask us to get together what you want and we will place it all on a dedicated table where you can pick it up.

Market Special this Week:

Medlars.  Pick up this ancient fruit that the Romans spread around the world and as mentioned by Shakespeare. $5.00 a kg with free information and recipe sheet.

LA CREPE SPECIAL MARCH 21st

IMG_0555.JPG (1)

We are right in the equinox this Saturday.

This week we had our yearly kitchen inspection from DCC Environmental Health Dpt.  It was very timely in regards to ensure we are delivering the best and review it.  The outcome was an A grade. Nevertheless, great care will be taken to provide the best service. However, if any concerns arise, I will have to stop coming to the market as long as needed in order to support the well-being of all of us.

In the meantime, below is the inspiration for this Autumn equinox.

Wishing you a great week-end.
