Hi there
I hope everyone is coping ok over these bumpy, disruptive few weeks. If you are still out & about then it’s the final weekend of National Farmers’ Market Week - a nationwide celebration to highlight the importance of farmers’ markets in our communities. We have had a great response to our Market bag full of goodies giveaway on Facebook & Instagram this week where you added your favourite vendors / stall - this will be drawn on Friday to celebrate this week. This weekend is also a celebration of our fine region – Happy Otago Anniversary Weekend!
Plenty of deliciousness can be found each weekend & while we can’t do samples right now, I can report a few things that have passed my taste test. I can declare the tapenade delicious at The Port Larder – & I’m pleased to say it’s nearly all in re-useable / returnable jars now. I tried the fresh smoked cheese at Holy Cow last week, I suggest you get some if you like a good smokey, smoked cheese if they have some. I also tried their bottled skim milk which I am converting over to. The chimney cakes at Breads & More are fun & very tasty. And I need to try the unique heirloom variety of black boy peaches this weekend to celebrate Otago Day – I’m ashamed to say I haven’t tried them, maybe I haven’t lived down south for long enough. But they sure do look intriguing with their blood red flesh, I’m sure many of you are already familiar with them. I spotted them at the Willowbrook Orchard stall last weekend & I’m pleased to see Diana there has shared her chutney recipe which I must try! The first of the quinces appeared at Rosedale Orchard last weekend, my year isn’t complete without making up a batch of quince paste / cheese (membrillo). And for all those colds & ailments going around on top of Covid then Wild Dispensary have some soothing & helpful tonics to make it all a bit more manageable & comfortable. I personally find their Rest & Calm a great product.
You will also find lots of variety of pears are coming through. I also ran around last weekend & did my own little price comparison on fruit & veg. Blooming big organic cauli’s were $5 each at Oamaru Organics & large organic iceberg lettuce $3 each. Ettrick Gardens had big fennel bulbs & silver beet bundles for $2.50 each. New season Apples were mostly around $2.80kg at Rosedale, Ettrick’s & Willowbrook our flowers are great value & gorgeous still. Pretty good prices all round on fresh produce compared to some supermarkets!
And for those of you stuck at home we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Waitaki Orchard, Princes St Butchery & others. All their details you can find on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz
Food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times. Do your shop & then grab a coffee & brunch on the way out to takeaway. Shop & go will also avoid any queuing & keep distancing safer in our outdoor Market so everyone can shop easily. And remember that we have a wonderful selection of specialist vendors up on the platform to check out as well.
Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval. Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product while you all respect 1mt distancing between each other & Market stalls.
Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.
Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies & fruit. All of our Ready to Eats are more than happy to fill your container or bowl to take home with you.
Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market! Take care of yourselves & each other & thanks for supporting local where you can. If you can buy for a friend stuck or sick at home right now then I know it’s always very much appreciated.

This Week in the kitchen
This week I have found two recipes from our archives that make the most of that great fruit on offer at the Otago Farmers Market. The salsa is minimal in preparation however, it looks like great addition to any cheese board or even nachos. I look forward to seeing you all at the market this weekend! Bella

It’s official, Tartan Sari has been at the market for a whole year! We just love seeing your beautiful faces every week and are so glad to be part of the market whanau :-)
To celebrate this week there's a very small supply of SPECIAL RESERVE Chilli Pickle. The chilies are homegrown and the flavour is magnificent and not too spicy!
Rich with tamarind and other secret ingredients it is a real treat…even for us.
If you love it as much as us we will try and yield a better crop next year so we have more to offer. We have only 10 x 100g jars available at $10 each.
We also have the last of our bargain box pickles - one lovely customer stocked up with about 12 jars last week, so don’t hang about!

Willowbrook Orchard
|
We have recently been picking the juicy lovely Doyenne du'Comice pears at Willowbrook Orchard Roxburgh. Decades ago we knick-named these 'The Ice cream Pear' because when they are sliced up, ripe, and fresh they make the easiest dessert when accompanied by ice cream. Sprinkle sugar on them or not, very delicious.
Black Boy Peaches make a yummy chutney as our son Adam proved this week. Here's the Recipe:
BLACK BOY PEACH CHUTNEY
- 1kg blackboy peaches, peeled, stone removed. (Can be made with yellow peaches too)
- 3 cups cider vinegar
- 2 cloves garlic chopped
- 100g crystallised ginger, chopped (or Tsp. ground dry ginger)
- 500g dates, chopped
- 400g raisins
- 800g brown sugar
- 1 Tsp. cayenne pepper (vary strength to suit personal taste)
- 2tspn salt
Put chopped peaches into a big pot. Cover with vinegar, then simmer until the peaches are soft. Add the rest of the ingredients and then cook for about 1/2 hour Stir occasionally until the mix thickens. Funnel into clean, hot, sterile jars and then seal. Yummy with anything! You can double the recipe.
Diana & John.

Dunford Grove

Going nuts here! These pesky little things taste great but are an awful lot of work, never will I gripe about the cost of something until I have a handle on what’s involved in producing it!
I’ll miss you all this weekend, off to meet the new grandson in Wellington.
Did you know?
Every piece of equipment for picking up hazelnuts, on a small scale, requires scorched earth. As we’re spray-free there’s a lot of time spent on all fours. Sandy
