Hi there
This Saturday will see the beginning of August and the last official month of winter! Yahoo! I, for one, am pleased to see the end of it this year.
Now is the time of year to be thinking about planting potatoes. These wonderful staples grow easily so if you haven’t grown them before now might be the year to start! Most of us potato lovers eagerly anticipate the first Jersey Benes as they really are a seasonal delicacy. This is the variety that I grow in my tiny vegetable garden, rather than a main crop potato. There is nothing that gives me more pleasure than bandicooting for enough for Christmas dinner!
The first step is to source your seed potato. You may need to go outside of the farmers market to do this. Regardless of this veg vendors will be able to advise you on how to sprout the “eyes” of the spud and the optimum growing conditions thereafter. Potatoes do like to be feed and I think they grow much better in the open ground, rather than in buckets. However some people do have great success with container growing and children, in particular, would get a lot of satisfaction out of a garden project such as this.
Spring really is in the air as I have just heard from Terracotta Plants that their bulbs are flowering and that they will be @ the market this week.
The team @ coKo lounge had a ripper of a start last week at the market. Their chocolaty, super food cacao drinks were a big hit. If you are looking for a healthy, coffee alternative then give them a go and feel just a little virtuous in the process!
And we will have an abundance of swedes for sale @ the market this week courtesy of the Rotary Club, Taieri branch. They are fund raising and what better to do that with then the southern staple, the mighty swede. We ate these raw as kids and loved the crunchy sweetness of them.
See you Saturday.
Stay warm
Kate

Dunford Grove - this week will be our last Market until spring

Truck full of trouble? No, the grandkids and cousins out for a blat! Driver on the right is a country girl, slightly spooked looking on the left is a city kid, I'm in there somewhere with my hand hovering over the handbrake!
This week will be our last Market until spring, we're just onsold out, so thanks to you all. This year's oil is just sent for certification as Extra Virgin Olive Oil, be ready for sale soon.
Did you know? We cannot use the Olives NZ certification Extra Virgin "mark" unless we submit our test results as proof that our oil meets their standards. Interestingly, the NZ standards are significantly higher than those of the International Olive Oil Council. Your guarantee that our oil is up with the world's best!

Locovore Boxes to your Door
|
If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:
Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm, Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka. That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz
