This Week at the Farmers Market

1st May 2021

Hi there

Chef Amy .jpeg

Is the long weekend, short week catching up on you as well?  And the rude shock to the system with the wintry chill & that hail!  Driving back from Central for a day trip on the weekend straight into it was an adventure not to be missed!  Hopefully there hasn't been too much crop damage, I haven't heard of any updates.

We said an early goodbye to some of our seasonal vendors last weekend (the long dry summer changed things up a bit), so Kakanui Produce, Waewae & Co of Flowers we hope to see again when we start to get a bit warmer again.

With the end of school holidays rolling around again already we have plenty of freshly picked apples & pear varieties for the lunch boxes & loads of meal ideas at the Market kitchen with our chef Amy.  Her rustic, family & allergy friendly recipes are proving popular, so there's always something to try on your way in the front gate and of course hot, freshly cooked brunch treats dotted around the Market to see you right as we ease into May!

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

See you Saturday….

NZ Nuts This Weekend

download.jpg

Notice to all buyers of Chestnuts:  If you purchased chestnuts earlier in the season, please call to the NZ Nuts stall.  A mistake was made in the pricing of chestnuts earlier in the season – the price has been reduced to $8.00/kg... if you paid more than this you are eligible for a refund or a pack of the equivalent weight of chestnuts while stocks last.  My apologies for any inconvenience. I anticipate that we will have chestnuts for the next 2-3 weeks.  I can be contacted at nznut1@xtra.co.nz

We completed harvest this week – courtesy of Ottos harvester which enables us to “drive into the tree”, wrap a harvesting net around the trunk, vibrate the tree and have the ripe nuts fall directly into the bins with less than 10% of our nuts falling to the ground!  So, the harvest process is quick and clean - I would not like to be without this harvester.  The dehulled nuts have been sundried for the first day this year due to our stunning autumn weather and this has speeded up the drying process.  Tim, our son, has been trailing further development of efficiencies at harvest time – watch this space next year!  This timely harvest and drying enables us to maintain optimal nut quality with light coloured kernels and free of the bitter aftertaste found in many walnuts.  Having Olivia on the stand has enabled my to optimise my time in getting nuts graded and down to the Otago Farmers Market.  Thank you Olivia.

This week we will have almonds, chestnuts and walnut cultivars of German (Geisenheim 23), French (Franquette) and North American (Vina) origins grafted and grown in Cromwell... and I aim to get some shelled nuts down as soon as possible! Meanwhile have a taste of the cultivars available – just like apples cultivars taste different so too with walnut cultivars.

Have a good week.
