This Week at the Farmers Market

21st January 2023

Hi there

Blue Willow Insert.jpeg

Tree ripened, flavoursome goodness is everywhere at the Market right now, don’t go paying expensive amounts for stone fruit at the supermarket when you can get fantastic value & quality each & every Saturday direct from our Central Otago growers.  I had my first nectarine of the season last Saturday from Willowbrook – very juicy & sweet and moorpark apricots from Earnscleugh Co-op – so good. I had several people tell me this week their pick of Market last weekend was the stone fruit from Rosedale Orchard – especially as you can pack your own.  It was great to have Eric & Noreen back at the Market from Blue Willow Blueberries, you can take your own container, they are recently certified organic which is great news, and they will be there for the season - just ask at the Market caravan on their whereabouts on the day.  Terracotta Plants had black & redcurrants last weekend, hopefully they might have more this week.  Good to see the courgettes / zucchini appearing at Kakanui Produce & Ettrick Gardens & I think the best bargain in town last week was my big bunch of red organic onions at Oamaru Organics for around $6 a bunch. We enjoyed Janefield strawberries at our board trust meeting this week, I had forgotten how sweet & big they get at this time of the year in the heat compared to Christmas time, so good! This could be the last weekend for the season for Big Fat Cherry Co.  Boyd & his son and the team will be up on the platform south end. Boyd has been with the Market around 17years, he specialises in cherries only and brings export quality fruit to the Market that he picks with his father-in-law for OFM, such is his obsession with quality control and bringing the very best to his loyal customers here – long may that last.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (veg boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.  And remember your containers, produce bags, keep cup, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.  We thank you for your loyal support rain or shine!

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you Saturday.

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

Stonehurst.png (2)

PENNYROYAL (Mentha pulegium)

As you may guess from the botanical name, this is a member of the Mint family - its small grey-green leaves give off a strong, minty fragrance with attractive small lilac flowers atop the stems in summer. This mint loves damp places and is an affective ground cover with flower stems reaching only 30cm high. Likes full sun - partial shade but cannot tolerate dryness in any location. It is known (proved scientifically!) and is safe to be used as an insect deterrent by being rubbed on the skin to deter mosquitoes & sandflies. Strew the cut herb in cupboards, in dog kennels & bedding and across doorways to deter ants and fleas - planting near a dog kennel can help with deterring fleas from the kennel/bedding. While it can be used medicinally for various internal issues (similar to any of the mints), it is often discouraged as consuming large doses internally as Pennyroyal can cause serious health issues (coma!) as well as being a known abortifacient (WARNING: avoid taking internally when pregnant).

Kiwi Harvest ‘Pay it Forward Bin’

kiwi.png (1)

The crate will be near the Market caravan at the main middle gate - look for a flag on top & if you feel like donating something extra from your shopping then Kiwi Harvest will collect each Saturday lunchtime & it gets distributed out to local charities for those in need this week.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Dear Customers & friends,

We are back at the market this week and I have important news to let you know: I am about to take a 6-month break (more or less) from the Otago Farmer’s Market to visit my family in France and help my sister to build her house in Britany. I intend to have my last market sometime after mid-February, depending on how much stock I have.  If you would like to stock up on some tempeh I sell 10 packets of frozen or fresh tempeh for $70 with different mixes depending on my stock. Other products like low-sugar jam, herbs, kimchi vegan cheese, and all the fermented vegetables including sauerkraut, kimchi and seasonal fermented.

Please request a list and prices of my products, email me at mariech123@icloud.com. I will follow up on your order which you will be able to collect from the market, my place in Ravensbourne, or we could also arrange a delivery (free for a $30 minimum) in Dunedin. It is essential you order them in advance and place your order ASAP (as I have limited stock) and no later than Sunday 5th February 2023.

If you would like to keep in touch while I am away and know when I will be back, please follow me on Facebook @Marie’s plant based foods, and I will post some updates.

I would like also to take this opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support, I could not dream of a better place to sell my products and have loved meeting you all on Saturdays for the past 3 years. Keep well.
