This Week at the Farmers Market

21st November 2020

Hi there

OFM Board of Trustees Otago Hall of Fame .jpeg

Another week closer to Christmas with 6 more markets before the big day!  Seasonal berries and stone fruit are making appearances and summer feels imminent. Butlers Berries will be back from now on for the season and we can all take great delight in knowing that summer holidays are just around the corner & we have just heard that Palmerston Asparagus will indeed be at the Market with their fantastic asparagus, so get in quick!

This from our Chair, Sharyn Crawford.

Otago Hall of Fame - Services to Otago - Otago Farmers Market.

The Otago Farmers Market Trust were honoured to be a finalist in the Services to Otago category, in the inaugural Otago Hall of Fame Awards.   We were delighted to attend this prestigious event and felt very privileged to accept the winner’s trophy and certificate on behalf of all of the people that have contributed over the past 18 years to make the market what it is today.

The market is a significant contributor to the Otago economy and the local innovative food scene.  It is the place to go for regional, seasonal and fresh food.  It also has been the “start-up place” for many successful businesses.  It is a place to be educated and inspired by the market kitchen’s seasonal recipes, to converse with those who have grown or produced the food and to socialize with family and friends and to interact with like-minded people.  The Market is an important part of the fabric of Dunedin and has the reputation of being one of the must do’s when visiting the city.  This welcoming environment draws the community back week after week.

The Otago Farmers Market Trust provides the infrastructure to connect Otago regions food growers and producers with their customers.

This award recognizes thousands of hours of voluntary time by the people that had the foresight and drive to set the market up initially and those that have undertaken the ongoing governance work since with our Trust ensuring its core values are upheld & the Market is viable.

The market also supports local groups, schools, community groups and organizations each week through our community stall enabling them to reach a large audience for their community fundraising and awareness endeavours.

Thanks to Mediaworks and all sponsors in particular O'Brien Group who sponsored the services to the community award, we were amongst great deserving finalists.

Saturday 9th January 2021, usual time 8am - 12.30pm

Marie’s Specials this Week:

Tempeh Burger.jpeg (1)

What is Marie’s Tempeh?

Most of the time, when you buy tempeh, it is pasteurised or “fresh – frozen”.

My tempeh is freshly made every week from different beans, cereal and seeds.  It has a delicate flavour which vary depending on the mix.

It needs to be kept in the fridge and will be fresh for the for the next 7 days, you can also freeze it for up to 9 months.

Tempeh is full of protein, vitamins, minerals, lots of dietary fibre and much more!

Because of this fermentation, it is an easy digestible food.

There is so many options, you can cook and use it: steamed, boiled, deep fried, pan fried, baked…

You can use in salads, in kebabs, soup, stew, bolognese……and burgers.  As you may have noticed,  I now cook tempeh burgers and sweet pancake sandwiches on the spot.

You even can choose to put some of my fermented vegetables in.

Everything is homemade, all vegan and gluten free.

It is very healthy and very delicious!!

Dunford Grove

Dunford.jpg (3)

Well, we've had some big help around the grove this week, there's always something to do for a keen pair of hands!  Archer has had a big week; first time on a plane by himself, first time buying some chickens and lots more.

Do you remember?

Last year we gave you a taste of our gluten free, dairy free Extra Virgin Olive Oil Christmas Cake and you loved it!  The recipe is on our website and I'm up on the platform this Saturday with one of the key ingredients, hope to see you.

Whitestone Halloumi Cheese Fries & Christmas Orders

Halloumi Fries Whitestone Final .jpg

As a treat from all of us here up at Whitestone Cheese, Henry has decided that for all of November Halloumi fries are on special for bargain price of $5.50

Also as Christmas nears don’t forget to put in your orders for your Christmas cheeses! I will be taking orders up until the first market of December (December 5th).

NZ Nuts This Weekend

hazelnuts and walnuts.jpg

Now is the time to think about walnut halves and pieces for Christmas baking – and in shell walnuts as stocking fillers (or am I the only one with that Christmas morning memory!).  This may be the last week with Gold size walnuts – stocks are getting low of these but we still have most cultivars.

See you Saturday.

Waste Volunteers - Are YOU our next Waste Warrior? Do you have a teenager that might need some volunteer experience?

Telagi.jpg

Do you have a teenager that might be looking for a few hours motivation on the occasional Saturday morning over summer!?

Are you someone passionate about our Market?

Are you motivated about helping our local community & the planet & have a few hours to help?

We are always on the lookout for great people (inlcuding the wonderful Telagi here & we have recently had a great team including Hermione & friends from Otago Girls High doing their volunteer hours towards the Duke of Edinburgh's Award) who are keen to be part of our waste educator team on a Saturday. It's only for a couple of hours once or twice a month or whatever you can do.  Looking for people to do the 8am - 10am or 10am - 12noon shifts.  If you are passionate about our environment & enjoy the market buzz & people, then we would love to hear from you or pop by and have chat with us at the market caravan or email Michele - info@otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

The job entails helping the public put their recycling or rubbish into the correct bins so we can appropriately recycle with Doubt Not Compost, etc where we can, to  help keep waste at the Market to a minimum.

We look forward to hearing from you or come by the caravan for a chat about it....

Michele
