This Week at the Farmers Market

22nd April 2023

Hi there

2023 Joint Farmers Market Winners.jpeg

Just a reminder that ALL our Market vendors are open officially at 8am, (we know that some are ready & open earlier), but there will be plenty for all if you are there from 8am.

The people have spoken & voted (also with their feet this year with the crowds, new customers and our long-time loyal shoppers) as we continue to be one of New Zealand’s most popular Farmers Market having now won it in 2017, 2019, 2020, 2022 & now 2023. Thank you everyone for your loyal support & voting for us in the Outstanding Food Producer Awards Kiwis’ Favourite Farmers Market who we jointly WON with our friends up at Clevedon Village Farmers Market (congrats to Helen & team + vendors there) & to all the other winners in various categories on the night including one of our vendors Whitestone Cheese taking out 2023 Dairy Champion for their Whitestone Oamaru Blue. Already announced previously for this year’s awards were Port Larder taking Golds for Ceylon Sauce, Tomato Sauce (gluten free) & Marmalade and Tartan Sari with silvers for Carrot Pickle & Rechard Masala Curry Paste. Di from Port Larder was up in Auckland to collect the award on our behalf.

Look out on our Facebook & Instagram pages on Friday to go in the drawer to win a Market goodie bag as part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, celebrating local since 2003.

Ginger Fox Foods & Dolce Vita will be back NEXT week.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (vege boxes), Waewae Permaculture (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Ginger Fox Foods Peanut Butter, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, Waitaki Orchard, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in the ORDER NOW button on our website or in the vendor profiles.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.  And remember your containers, produce bags, berry punnets, plant pottles, jars, bottles, keep cup, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.  Remember to try to return the correct packaging to those that you brought off if you remember (e.g. supermarket branded strawberries punnets can’t be reused by some of our vendors).  And borrow a keep cup from our cup library or coffee / chai / hot choc vendors.  If you want to BORROW A PLATE or CUTLERY for ready to eats just swing by the caravan for a clean one (& return back there for cleaning later), we also have bags you can borrow for produce or shopping too if you forget.

We are also a finalist in the Farmers Market of the Year Organic NZ Awards 23 amongst some good company.  Vote for us below or check out our post on Facebook if you think the Otago Farmers Market is the most popular farmers’ market in Aotearoa!

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.  We thank you for your loyal support!

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you on Saturday.

NZ Nuts

NZ Nuts Almonds.jpg

NZ Nuts will be back at the market this Saturday with new season almonds and chestnuts, plus specials on our remaining 2022 season walnuts. It was a challenging harvest with some unseasonal frosts and rain, so this year's walnuts are still in the drying room. They'll be available next time we're down or by mail order from nuts@nznuts.co.nz.

Thanks! Tim

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

Stonehurst_.png

WINTER SAVORY (Satureja montana)

One of the oldest 'flavouring' herbs with a peppery spiciness. Narrow, dark green leaves year around with small white-pink flowers in summer.

Long considered an antiseptic herb which is beneficial to the whole digestive system - once upon a time it was classed as a stimulant and was in demand as an aphrodisiac!

Ideal infused in vinegar for dressings and prefect for cooking with broad beans. The peppery flavour is a perfect addition to dishes for those who require a salt-free diet.

Use the flowering stems as an astringent and antiseptic for facial steams or in baths for oily skin.

You can use the flowering stems as an infusion as a tea to stimulate appetite, ease indigestion and flatulence. A 'strong' tea can be used as an antiseptic gargle for sore throats.

Medically wise leaves can be crushed and applied to insect bites or wasp stings for pain relief.

Highly aromatic and extremely valuable when planted near beehives.

Pick and dehydrate flowering stems for use throughout the year.

Well drained loamy soils in full sun. Prune to prevent woody growth. Ideal for low hedges. Evergreen. Ht 45cm.  Cheers, Kate

No.8 Distillery Limoncello 2022 Vintage Edition

IMG_0170.JPG

No.8 Limoncello "A Family recipe since 1996" -  20% Alc/Vol

The sweet citrus of lemons is softened into a wide body of taste through the two varietals zested to make this delightfully warming libation. Pairs well with the East Imperial Yuzu Tonic/lemonade/ginger beer or neat on ice.

Let me know if you have any questions!  Thanks, Julien.
