Hi there
Firstly we want to give a huge shout out to Tess Trotter. Tess has been a highly active Trustee for the past two years getting involved in multiple projects and contributing to the kaupapa of the market in a highly inclusive, sharing and giving way. We love Tess and were sad when she made the hard decision to step down as a Trustee. However she is still very keen to volunteer in the market hub from time to time so we will continue to get our Tess fix!!
This time a year ago the Trust were seriously concerned about where local vegetable growers were going to come from. We had lost Mc Arthurs and were actively strategising about how to attract more vege growers to the market because what is an authentic farmers market without tons of vegetables!
The great news is that the universe has provided and we now have lots of new vegetable vendors at the market. Fresh produce reigns! Both Janefield Hydroponics and Oamaru Organics have increased production and the size of their market sites. Have you seen the size of that refrigerated truck Oamaru Organics are bringing now? That sucker fits a ton of vegetables so there is no running out early anymore. These two long term vendors have stuck their necks out and shown huge confidence in and commitment to the market and to you as customers as they have increased their investment in what they do.
But it doesn’t stop there. Caithness Farms are travelling down from Waimate every week to bring their delicious tasting vegetables to us and have started growing a much broader variety which we will start to see trickling into the market this season. And wait there’s more! Waewae permaculture, up on the platform are investing in the land at Purakanui and growing great veg plus the Trust approved this week another, potentially certified organic, grower. Wow! Abundance!
And of course Ettrick Gardens, Wairuna Organics, Waikouaiti Gardens, Kakanui Produce, Otago Organics, Brightside Microgreens, Terracotta Plants, Rosedale Orchard and Te Mahanga all contribute mightily to the plethora of fresh-as vegetables we can buy at the market.
So no excuses people, over the growing season the market no longer runs out of vegetables. Of course to get your pick of all the variety it is still good to not leave it to midday to arrive!!!
JUST OFF THE PRESS ... just heard from Eric Johnson who grows blueberries in Fairfield and they will be at the market this week. Yay!!
Some of you may be interested in helping us out on an occasional Saturday morning. From 10am – noon we require a volunteer to staff the market hub and deal with customer inquiries and sell merchandise. This is a pleasant role that mostly the Trustees fill but from time to time we have a few gaps. If you are interested and would like to know more then email me here.
See you Saturday
Kate

Dunford Grove:

We live in an amazing valley. If you plant it, then water it, the results are stunning! All provided you've chosen plants that can take a winter as well.
Our olives are now about the size of a match head so water is really important. Currently we're applying about 25 litres per tree every evening and over the growing season this will increase to 40 litres.

Otago Organics
|
New to the stall this week delicious HERITAGE RASPBERRIES from Old School Organics from West Otago. Come and taste!
Our new season’s Organic Fruit available this Saturday. Wilson’s Early Plums are a sweet dessert plum with a cherry red skin and golden flesh. This is also a great and flavoursome plum for preserving and jam making. Ask for our jam recipe. To help with this we are also offering a discount for purchases of these plums of 2Kgs or more.
We also, of course, have our regular salad mix with edible flowers. We bring this loose to the market and are happy to fill your own bag or box. Check out our other fresh produce also.
From now on we will have limited stock of fresh Courgette Flowers. Look for our sign on the stall and ask for these from our chiller box as these are very delicate and deteriorate very quickly on these warm summer days if out on display.
