This Week at the Farmers Market

23rd October 2021

Hi there

Ray Goddard.jpg

We opened our board meeting this week acknowledging one of our founding pioneer Market vendors & trustees Ray Goddard who passed away last week.  I never met him, but I heard the lovely stories over the weekend from our vendors & the board.  I know Ray was passionate about his potatoes, but Ray also did a lot for the Market in the early days.  Everyone knew his name; he was good fun & a real character.   He was always upfront about his growing plans & his produce stayed at $1 for years (which he always got told was too cheap by everyone!).  He was part of the small team with Rodger (Janefield), Nigel (Oamaru Organics) & Steve McArthur to open the platform area up with screens to how it looks today.  He was fondly remembered by the board for his smile and a good yarn. As one of the board summed him up, he would call a spud a spud!  And he had His ways.  He was a friend to many at the Market & even though he left in 2013 due to ill health, he will long live on at the Otago Farmers Market.  Much love to Ray’s wife Maureen & family.

We look forward to seeing you all this Labour Weekend (yes, it’s this weekend!).  Kate from Stonehurst Mushrooms is back after a long absence with her grow your own herbs, edibles, mushroom products, etc.  Will be fabulous to see Fiona & Lian back for the season from Waewae Permaculture again this weekend too.  Find them in a NEW spot (Wes’s old spot from Te Mahanga) in the lower Market beside Abdal’s.  And…. we welcome a brand-new vendor this weekend, Gary & Brenda from Run Rabbit from Cromwell, with fresh pasta (I can say it is very, very good!).  FYI, Nigel from Oamaru Organic's is planning to be back next weekend for all of you who have been asking.

The same protocols are in place this week, mask wearing (unless you have an exemption or for children), scanning in & keeping the 2mt distancing.  Please use the MAIN MIDDLE GATE on Anzac Ave & depart from there as well (all other gates are blocked off).  If you are parking in the north carpark, please walk around to the main front gate, this is so we can track numbers.  There should be an easy flow in again this week.

We ask if you could please take coffee & food off site to eat from our many ready to eat vendors that way we can keep the flow happening for everyone quickly into the Market to shop.

We look forward to seeing you all this weekend!  Bring your cash, bags, keep cup or mug, containers, mask & charged phone for scanning.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  And welcome to any out-of-town visitors, we look forward to meeting you.

Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen

Seeing all that delicious peppery leafy goodness at the market made me rustle up some yum rocket & watercress recipes from the archives. With the salad, you can get almost all the ingredients from our wonderful vendors produce. The sweet couscous recipe is an intriguing one, is it  a dessert, breakfast or snack? Is it a bird, is it a bat? I have no idea, but sign me up... Kristina

Wild Dispensary

Thyme harvest .jpg

For those of you that don't know, every one of our products has a 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 element.  Whether it be thyme from Central Otago or wild elderberries from the Taieri plains in Dunedin. Summer is on the way and that means we're gearing up for some more wild harvesting (Thyme, Elderflower, Californian poppy, Horehound and St John Wort).

The Wild Dispensary crew will be off in the next wee while for a thyme harvest.

Central Otago thymes ability to withstand the hottest summers and the coldest winters makes it incredibly strong and the active constituent within it (thymol) super potent and effective. Thymol is a powerful deterrent to other invading plants, bacteria, viruses, or fungi and by harvesting this plant we too benefit from its immunity and protection. Thymol is both antibacterial, antiviral and has been used traditionally for years to help with ills and chills, bronchitis, coughs, sore throats, and runny noses as well as helping to act as a spasmolytic and expectorant.  Pretty amazing stuff right? If you want to get your hands on some you can try our Chest Tonic, Throat Spray or Vira Elixir.

Come and say hello this Saturday and check out of our range of ‘Wild Herb Formulas’. Still no tastings but we promise they taste good as well as being highly effective! Reviews on our website (www.wildidspensary.co.nz ) and always welcome in person too.

Ruth, Skye, Ged, Sarah and Brydie -Our Team :)
