This Week at the Farmers Market

Christmas Eve 2021

Hi there

Meri Kerihimete!  The longest day has been & gone (15hrs & 44mins of solstice light in one day down here, how lucky are we with these long days). So now finally it’s officially summer & hopefully we will still have more balmy days & not quite so much rain.  And the best of the best will be available to you on Friday.  Cherries, berries, peaches, nectarines are all arriving thick & fast at the Market freshly picked!  The gates won’t be locked off this year so you can get in earlier if you are masked up & have scanned in.  My big nag is please respect everyone’s space of 1mt.

Our Christmas Market is 8-11am FRIDAY 24th December (NOT on Saturday) & the following market is FRIDAY 31st Dec (8-11am) but not on Saturday.  Then as normal from 8th January through out.

We will have a great array of freshly baked bread & goods & all your essential supplies of milk, eggs, cheese, meat, honey, wine, fruit & vegies, etc.  You will find great tasting varieties of cherries at Willowbrook, Rosedale & Earnscleugh Orchards, and for the many of you asking about Big Fat Cherry Co, Boyd has let me know with the recent weather they have had it’s looking likely they won’t be at the Market till 31st Dec.  Likewise with Butlers Berries, the weather & problems getting pickers means that you are advised if driving up north over the holidays that you drop in on them & PYO this year.

If you are still after last minute gift ideas swing by the Market caravan & we have locally made tea towels, cards & beeswax wraps which is a hand illustrated map of all our vendors around Otago or we have Market gift vouchers – remember your cash.  But there is also plenty to find at the Market which will be appreciated by your family & friends.  The gift of cheese (Evansdale + Whitestone), the gift of honey (Blueskin Bay + Bennies + Earnscleugh), the gift of heritage seeds or flowers (Matheson’s + Merrill), the gift of great olive oil & hazelnut dukkah (Dunford Grove), the gift of jam (Marie does great low sugar jam), the gift of homemade pesto & sauces (Port Larder), the gift of boutique hand crafted beer (Catlin’s True Brew), the gift of a hamper of meat (heaps of BBQ options at Blue Mountain + Havoc) & many other gifts!  And lots of ‘bring a plate’ contributions to the Christmas lunch or dinner to be found aplenty!  Who doesn’t appreciate a bag of cherries or Otago stone fruit?  And if you are heading away then be sure to stock up with quality produce, salad greens (Waewae + Janefield + Brightside), jersey benne potatoes & greens (Oamaru Organics) & plenty of options of fruit & vegies (Ettrick’s).  Courgettes & plants (Kakanui) & living herbs to go on holiday with you (Stonehurst).

Sadly, this will be the last Market for Brendan from Urbn Vino as he winds up this arm of his business with the last of his stock on Friday, we will miss him on the platform.

Remember too, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

And a reminder that food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times.

We look forward to seeing you all this weekend!  And always remember your keep cup, containers & bags this summer!  Lets try to minimise single use anything, even while on holiday.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!   And stay safe, have fun, eat nice food & make the most of the festive season in whatever way does it for you!  Season’s festive greetings to all our wonderful supportive customers, our dedicated community of vendors & the OFMT board, our volunteers & our little Market crew of Kristina, Philip, Riley, Telagi, Amy & Jude who help keep things functioning each week.  A big thank you for supporting local in these tough times - wishing you a cheery merry cherry happy christmas to all!

This Week in the kitchen

And a Meri Kerihimete from me as well! Thanks so much to all the amazing customers for supporting all our amazing local vendors this year! It’s been a weird at best, and difficult for many: so it’s lovely to have the community spirit here in the festive season. I found a few tasty ideas for your Christmas dinner or with left overs, using the incredible produce on offer from our region. Nothing like a good trifle in my humble opinion and one with fresh Central Otago cherries as well as strawberries, sounds like a winner! Enjoy! Kristina

As another year draws to a close just want to give all of you lovely peeps a humongous hug... It's been really weird right... but the comfy cultural cuddle... cosy community huddle we are all so lucky to enjoy every Saturday rain or shine (more of the former of late seemingly)... has really dearly helped... We love you all!

So, apologies of a profuse persuasion but this warm fuzzy feeling has prompted more ridiculous rhyming rhubarb (a bit further down)...

Look forward to seeing you all up on the platform for some lovely jubbly beer (10 different ales for you discerning drinkers)... pastry straws (yep sweet and savoury)… smoked salmon pate... chicken liver pate... dips and chips... did someone say party...

Oh, and just let you know we won't be there on New Year’s Eve but will be back on the 8th...

Yippee... Yuletide... they all cried… it is again finally here..

Prime time for tasty tipples then me old mucker...

Ooh... yeah there's Christmas cheer in a beer with those near and dear...

Hey, let's not forget... the yummy scrummy tummy tucker...

Not too shabby a way to celebrate the end of the year...

What a festive feast of fantastic frolics & frivolity...

Larking and lounging about... come on some fun in the sun (southern hemisphere rocks)...

You might increase you girth but worth it for the mirth n lashings of jollity...

Cannot wait mate... wishing a very merry... cheery beery Christmas… to everyone!...

Toby

Merry Christmas people.  In spite of everything, we’ve had quite a nice year and a large part of that is thanks to you all.  That, and the fact we’re hidden away in the fantastic place that is Central Otago.

Did you know?

Extra Virgin Olive Oil helps stave off Alzheimer’s disease.  Before we moved here and I started drinking our oil I could forget what I was doing walking from one side of the room to the other, now I can get to the other end of the house!
