This Week at the Farmers Market - Christmas Market

Saturday 24th December 2022

Hi there

Outstanding FM Award 2022 OFMT.jpg

See you on Saturday morning bright & early from 6:30am – 11amGates will open at 6:30am.

Then the following Market is New Year’s Eve morning Saturday 31st December – we are open normal days & hours from then on (8am – 12:30pm). Thanks to everyone that stocked up last weekend, was lovely to see you all!

We will have plenty of the freshest produce for the big day, the Christmas table, the holidays or to stock the fridge at home to see you through the week (and at great prices). There will be coffee & brunch options to keep you sustained.  Check out Catlin’s Kitchen on the platform for homemade mayo, aioli and pates.  There are still plenty of gift idea’s & stocking fillers at Dunedin Craft Distillers, No.8 Distillery, Dunford Grove (olive oils & hazelnut panforte), baked festive delights at Dolce Vita, cherries at Willowbrook, Rosedale, Earnscleugh & Big Fat Cherry.  Cheeses at Evansdale & Whitestone, flowers from Merrall, Matheson & Roberts & Alysan Willocks.  All your salad & jersey benne needs at Oamaru Organic's, Caithness Farm, Waewae, Janefield’s & Ettrick Garden’s. Otago peaches have arrived too!  (Hopefully we might see the first of the apricots as well). Market tea towels, cutlery keep kits, bags, cards & jumbo beeswax wraps at the Market caravan at front gate if you are still looking for local gifts made in Dunedin. Raspberries & strawberries - be in quick! Honey, coffee, milk, eggs, plants, meat, hazelnut supplies, bread, pastries, preserves, tapenades, plant-based options, nut mylks, fresh juices and lots more available this weekend!

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.  And remember your containers, produce bags, keep cup, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

A reminder no doggies in the Market – but you can always tie them up from the main gate (just inside) & we will keep an eye out.

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  Hopefully we’ll see you if you haven’t headed away yet.

Merry Christmas everyone, take care of yourselves and those around you, have fun, eat yummy stuff and enjoy the festive season when you can.  And if you are working throughout, thank you for keeping the wheels ticking over in our fine little city & region.  From us all (the vendors, the board of trustees and staff) at your favourite Otago Farmers Market- a HUGE thank you for stopping by this year, or doing your weekly shop or buying coffee or brunch, or playing live music for us or visiting us when you are in Dunedin.  Your support has been noticed and appreciated!

This Week in the kitchen

After a big build-up, Christmas is almost here! I am excited to have food cooked by my mum instead of a flat full of students, that being said I will be making the most of the Market produce this weekend and will bring her home the best local ingredients! These pancakes make a great Christmas morning treat, followed by the Jersey Benne potatoes for lunch. Merry Christmas! I am looking forward to seeing you all this Saturday. Isabella (Assistant Manager)

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

SPEARMINT (Mentha spicata)

This is one of the most common mints about and is the one generally used in cooking - think of new potatoes boiled with a sprig of mint on the Christmas table or of mint sauce with the roasted lamb!

Spearmint is one of the major components in the Mint Julep🍹 and is often added to many other cold drinks for a fresh flavor.

The aroma of mint is quite pungent and can be added to potpourri mixes or wrapped fresh in/or drops of mint oil can be added to a handkerchief and inhaled to help relieve a cold.  Sip cold spearmint tea to help relieve hiccups or flatulence. Macerate leaves in oil and massage at your temples to help relieve migraines or massage the mint oil into other areas of the body that are affected by rheumatic and/or muscular aches - especially in winter.

Spearmint grown near your favorite plants can help deter the aphids.

A hardy perennial that tolerates shade and can grow in most conditions - ideally grow in a container unless you have a large garden or the time to keep it under control🌱

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to all.  Kate

Dunford Grove

Dunford.png (10)

Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for another awesome year!  I really enjoy my spot on the platform with the other vendors and the continuous stream of delightful market goers.  Flowering in the grove at the moment and if the bountiful raspberries are any indication, we’re headed for a fantastic season.

Did you know?  Sharing food experiences is one of the delights of this business, my friend Shona has taken cheese balls to the next level by coating them with Dunford Dukkah. I’d never have thought of that.  So, if you’re entertaining this summer, remember BBnDD (Brilliant Balls need Dunford Dukkah)!  Enjoy. Sandy
