This Week at the Farmers Market

26th February 2022

Hi there

Sending you all a bit of love right now.  I hope you are hanging in there. It is a tough week or two for many in the region either self-isolating, sick, the stress of waiting to hear if you are a close contact or results, the extra running around for others for supplies who can’t get out & about, our health care professionals (many of whom are our customers) who are over-loaded with work, our hospo industry and everyone else doing it tough right now in our good city & around the country. Hopefully this rocky patch will ease quickly in a few weeks now we are in phase 3, RED once we get over the worst of it.  Supporting our local community right now is important now more than ever.  We aim to keep our local supply chains direct from the farms, orchards, local businesses flowing where possible & our vendors will be doing all they can to do this safely.  It will mean there will be blips from week to week where some vendors can’t attend, but we aim to keep operating in a safe manner with your help.  Please stay home if you are unwell or are a positive case.  Please wear your masks (unless exempt). Please keep your distance.  All our vendors are expected to be correctly masked (unless they have a clearly marked exemption of which there is only a handful).  All our vendors are abiding by safety rulings. We welcome everyone under these guidelines to shop as safely as possible in the fresh air.  And we are all in this together & together we will get through!

Food & beverages are to be taken OUT of the Market to be consumed, as masks should be kept ON at all times.  Do your shop & then grab a coffee & brunch on the way out to takeaway (there's always the garden outside the Railway Building for a picnic).  Shop & go will also avoid any queuing & keep distancing safer in our outdoor Market so everyone can shop.

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates, who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product while you all respect 1mt distancing between each other & Market stalls.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working.

The cows still need milking, the chooks still keep laying, fruit & veggies still keep growing & we aim to keep feeding the community.  We have all your essential supplies of the freshest & tastiest produce at great prices & plenty of plants if you need some restorative time in the garden!

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  Take care of each other & thanks for supporting local where you can.

Willowbrook Orchard - Diana's Preserving Tips

Omega Plums Willowbrook.jpg

The beautiful Omega Plums are being again picked at Willowbrook this week by John and Jack. These are a beautiful plum. Good fresh. When ripe very sweet. They make lovely jam, sauce or chutney. They preserve in jars well and freeze easily. I do both.

Let's talk about freezing. Dry wipe, so they won't stick together. This is important as they can be pulled out once frozen one by one and bag resealed. Any bag size is fine if they free flow. I take out just the number i need each time. When cooking frozen plums (or any frozen stone fruit) remember to make your syrup to taste in a pot. Get syrup to a rolling boil and carefully drop one plum in at a time in. Once all in, bring temperature back to a medium summer till all cooked. They should keep good form. Serve hot or cold. It's nice to remove stones once cooked and mash up some with generous amounts of juice to make fruit ice blocks. You can use any fruit you have including plums.

Remember that Omega plums are excellent for Jam and Crumbles, Pies, Sponge top puddings and chopped fresh into Muffins. Quite nice in fruit loaves if chopped small. Plenty of gorgeous bright coloured apricots this week to enjoy fresh, as jams, dessert or savoury sauces, chutney, bottling and freezing. Fantasia Nectarines are sweet and special, ideal fresh or to preserve. Peaches as well, will join the good fruits to put away for colder months as well as eating fresh. Enjoy a fruitful weekend 😊🌴🍑🍊🌞from Diana Gilchrist (Willowbrook Orchard)

La Crepe Weekend Specials

March 23rd 2019.jpg

Intuition is the word of my week.

Cooking needs plenty of love and care, and feelings play a big part. When it come to savoury dishes, intuition is more allowed than sweet where everything needs to be measured which require discipline and focus. Isn't it a kind of a way of living?

Below are the specials.

Wishing you a great weekend.
