Be your own plastic free hero!

26th July 2018

Hi there

BYO Kit winner

I predicted it here! Terracotta Plants are back this week and I am pretty positive that they will have an assortment of gorgeous flowering bulbs that simply scream Spring! Go welcome them back and check out those plucky yet delicate blooms.

Plastic free July is coming to an end but our push to exterminate single use bags, containers  and cups goes on. Compile your good selves with a “market kit” so that you are prepared every Saturday as you walk out the door. We have a “kit” showcased in the photo, show us yours on Saturday and we’ll donate a produce bag to your mix.

I am off to Auckland and Whangarei next week to visit farmers markets up that way. Sharyn, the new chair of the Trust is coming with me and we are packing in 7 markets in two days. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it J. Of course part from eating and drinking very well we will be on the scout out for ideas that we can bring back to our market, Clevedon Market I believe is zero waste, something we aspire to but have more work to do to achieve. Our bags will be full of citrus, avocadoes and other northern produce for the trip home.

Spelt Bakery started last week and were very well received. Their stall looks great and the products freshly baked. My bread was still warm out of the oven!

Proud new dad, Matt from the Tart Tin will be back too.

The road works continue (all around the city centre as it happens) so take care getting in and out of the market.

See you Saturday

Kate

Dunford Grove

oil test results 2018.jpg (1)

Results are back from the lab.  We can't use the Olives New Zealand or Central Otago Olive Grower's marks unless our oil meets rigidly defined criteria. Interestingly, Olives NZ sets a higher standard than IOC,  the International body.  We absolutely met and exceeded the standards required.

This year's oil has had some excellent feed back at markets around the lower South Island and we have our fingers crossed for a great result in the national competitions come October.

Did you know?

It's the polyphenol level that defines an Extra Virgin Olive Oils classification: Up to 150mg/kg is delicate, between 151 & 299 is medium and over 300mg/kg is intense.  At over 400 we're absolutely intense and it's the level of polyphenol that makes the oil such a healthy food.  It's also the style of oil that routinely gains gold medals at competitions!

Holy Cow

morning cow.JPG

This week Holy Cow has more maple syrup flavoured yoghurt to try - let us know what you think! We're also testing on some other new flavours using fruits from the market. You'll also see a not-so-familiar face this week, as Alex from the farm will be on our stall while Tess and Sam volunteer for a community event.

Milk production at the farm is still low with us still being a mighty bit chilly, so our selection of products and quantities are limited and if you want to make sure you get them, please come in early. A few of the cows udders are 'bagging up', meaning calves are on their way, so more milk in about a months time.

This week we have:

  • Skim Milk
  • Full Fat Milk
  • Cream
  • Yoghurt
  • Flavoured yoghurt
  • Lassi
  • Alex McNeille instead of Tess Trotter

Bay Road and the Savvy Seven

almond butter.JPG

Savvy Seven is the 2018 Columba College Young Enterprise Team. As a group we are passionate about local, sustainable and feel good produce and wanted to create a product that would allow us to make it to the national finals for the young enterprise competition. This is why we have partnered with local company Bay Road to produce a 100% natural almond butter in re-useable glass jars. The values that Bay Road carry and stand for align with our own so collaborating with them was a no brainer. We have our farmers market debut this Saturday and look forward to seeing you all there!

Kapowai Brewing Co.

See you on Saturday!

Ettrick Gardens

Ettrick Gardens will not be at the market this week.

They are taking a week off for a well deserved break. Don't worry though they will be back next week with all your favourite fresh produce.
