This Week at the Farmers Market

26th November 2022

Hi there

Bags best shot .jpeg

Hope your week is going well between all the rain showers around the motu.  At the Market we look forward to you saving money while you shop for your fresh produce this weekend & every weekend.  The summer fruit & vegies are starting to appear & the coming weeks will see more volume.  Buying directly from the growers you will find the best value & freshness at farmers markets, as you probably already well know! Caithness Farm will be back this weekend with new season broad beans & Jeff has let me know they will have some strawberries & new potatoes in limited supplies this week as well.

We have some students this weekend handing out FREE reuse produce bags, bread bags, etc at the main gate from 10am if you have forgotten yours.  Pat Johnston a Market volunteer (& was our long time OFMT board member for many years), has been sewing up a storm of reused material & offcuts to make upcycled bags for most of your different Market purchases.  If everyone remembered to bring their own then there should be no reason for vendors to have rolls of bags (which I know are compostable, but not an ideal solution for every product, some products do need this though, fresh fish, salad mixes, etc).  Some of you are brilliant at remembering your stash from home.  I know my linen bread bag keeps a Gilbert’s rye loaf fresh for the whole week, it really is a game changer.

Congrat’s to Kiwi Harvest in the Grand Business South Awards on the weekend for winning the Excellence in Not for Profit & to Gilbert’s Fine Food for making the finals of the Excellence in Retail this year, both doing great things in our community.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. Remember your keep cup / mug (if you forget, check with your beverage vendor if they have spares to borrow to save on a single use throw out cups – which are just not cool!), we will keep supplying them with cups where needed, it’s up to us all to make use of this.  And remember your containers, produce bags, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (veg boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

Our Christmas Market lands on Saturday 24th December this year and will be an early 6:30am – 11am one, we can operate like the old pre covid days & lock off gates till opening this year - which always creates a frenzied rush of shoppers for Christmas day supplies & customers wanting coffee & brunch. The following Market is then New Year’s Eve morning Saturday 31st December – there are no extra markets over the festive period, just all the usual Saturdays so nice & straight forward.

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!   See you Saturday.

Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen

Fast approaching is the time of the year where last minute BBQ's are frequent and the need for a good dip is a must when hosting. This dip is great to fill that need and you can get all of the fresh produce this Saturday! The basil and strawberry tart is a great follow up for dessert.

Hello, Picklelovers. We are all ready for your Christmas gift purchasing, with gift boxes and all our varieties available (though a reminder that zucchini and tomato stocks are low).

You’ll also find a new seasonal product on our stall from now until Christmas Eve. ‘Spicy Seeds and Nuts’ are seasoned with Olive Oil, Maple Syrup, a dash of salt and our Rechard Masala Curry Paste. They are incredibly more-ish and make a great stocking filler…or you could buy a jar of Rechard Masala and make them yourself?

Come and try a sample on Saturday.

Finally as a seasonal good-will gesture- until the New Year - I have removed the credit card surcharge and added payWave to our eftpos machine! Hopefully, that will make things a bit easier for you.

Seasons Greetings.  Danielle x

Waewae Permaculture

We have some beautiful early garlic to bring to the market along with our usual range. We gave a tunnel house a rest from tomatoes and planted garlic instead. The result is some great bulb sizes. More is coming on each week too with plenty of Spring onions, Coriander, Salad mix, Radishes, Dill, Cos & more.

In addition to selling at the market, we have again started our weekly veggie box service that is now available in Dunedin City. If you are interested or know someone who can't make it to the market on Saturday you can order here: https://openfoodnetwork.org.nz/waewae-permaculture/shop  Lian & Fiona

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week

BASIL (Ocimum basilicum)

Its warm, spicy flavour just speaks of summer!

A heat-loving annual that is a native of India. Basil has had a long history with humans dating back to Christ's tomb and as such over the years many cultivars have been produced - different leaf shapes and colours but all are still Ocimum basilicum!

The most known thing about basil is its use in cooking - it's best to rip (not cut) the leaves or pound them with oil and add them at the last minute to dishes.

If you grow pots of basil near windows or doors it helps to deter flies.

Adding basil flowers and/or leaves will create an invigorating bath!

Medicinally infuse as a tea to aid digestion whereas basil essential oil when inhaled is supposed to help with mental fatigue.

For best results grow in full sun in a hot sunny location with plenty of water (but not waterlogged!).

NB: One old rural Mexican 'wives tale' tells if you carry basil in your pocket it's supposed to magnetize money!!!  Kate

Do you love the Otago Farmers Market? Do you know someone who does? We’d certainly like to meet you if you’d like to staff our stand and its award winning products 3 Saturdays a month!
You would need to enjoy meeting people, love olive oil, and be as keen on local as we are. The platform is a fun place, our fellow vendors are good company and, most importantly, the market brings a stream of delightful people right to you every week.
Interested? Lets talk! Come and see me or give me a call and we’ll explore how this could work.
