This Week at the Market

Hi there

New baby .jpeg

Whooppee this week we put the clocks forward and spring into Spring! I, for one, am looking forward to increased daylight in the evening hours. Mind you we will be plunged back into darkness at the market first thing in the morning but that will not last long.

Next month, October, is all about celebrating vegetarianism and cheese – two things that go rather well together unless, of course, you are a vegan. We are spoilt at the market in having two rather wonderful cheese vendors. Not only is the cheese delicious but generally there is no shortage of witty banter flying around as well. Henry from Whitestone is branching out from this week and serving Whitestone halloumi chips and cheese rolls , piping hot and oozy. Rather a nice snack to graze on as you cruise around the market.

Yummy, fresh vegetables are a cornerstone of the market and as spring progresses we will see more and more seasonal vegetables pour into the market. As it is there are lots of salad greens appearing and no shortage of staples.

We have a new addition to the vendor whanau, pictured here. Shelley and Vaughn from Blue Mountain Butchery welcomed little Jodie Belle into the world recently. This is child number 6 for them so there will be no shortage of helpers in the years to come. Their eldest son is now Vaughn's apprentice in the butchery and is often to be found serving cuts at the market.

See you Saturday.

Doubt Not Compost!

Issac with shovel.jpg

Issac from Doubt Not Compost here in Dunedin manages our market recycling waste & will be at the market this weekend selling a few cuttings grown in the potting blend they make from local hospo waste.  Have a chat to him if you need ideas on your own composting system at home. The hard work hard they do for the market & for Dunedin is inspiring!  Hit him up for composting tips & loads of other stuff!

Excited to announce that Company of Flowers will be back at the market on the 3rd of October!

IMG_20200828_175715_014.jpg

In the meantime check out my new website:

www.companyofflowers.com

It even has an ordering system so you can have flowers delivered direct to your home!

See you on the 3rd of October.

Dunford Grove

DG 3.jpg

Pruning time here for the olive trees.  Some of you have been asking our lovely Market friends when we will be back?  Well, we are off to the NZ Olive Awards early October and will be back with you in mid-October.  Remember, you can order on line at www.dunfordgrove.com and for purchases over $100 we offer free courier.

Did you know?

An olive grows on one year old wood, so last year’s new growth bares this year’s fruit.  With pruning we have several goals: Complete canopy replacement every 5-7 years, an open canopy allowing light in and keeping nesting birds and disease at bay plus culling branches that will not shake well in mechanical harvesting.

Locavore Boxes to your Door!

locovores 2.jpg (1)

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:  Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz
