This Week at the Farmers Market

27th August 2022

Hi there

2BB18C67-5E1D-4E37-AFA5-D6762604F8C7.jpeg

This week at the Market will see a few more daffodil’s dotted around at the gates for the Daffodil Day + I noticed last weekend Terracotta Plants had daff’s & crocus plants to buy.  So good to see spring making its appearance once again after a long winter.

Congrats to our wonderful waste minimisation Market volunteer Telagi, who was announced this week as Finalist in the Resilience category of the 2022 Volunteer Awards. Telagi helps guide our customers with putting recycling, etc into the correct bins to minimise our waste, keeping the area clean, tidy & sanitized and he helped on gate duties while restrictions were in place earlier in the year. We appreciate him fronting up week after week (actually year after year!) & taking this responsibility on with good cheer.

I had the pleasure of attending the Otago Hospitality Awards at The Regent on Monday night.  We have such a great selection of talent in our hospitality industry here in Otago & we love that many of our fantastic local chefs, restaurants, cafes, etc frequent the Market for their businesses or order from our many vendors to showcase what we grow, produce & create well here – thank you!  On the awards night many of our Market vendors contributed to a grazing table fit for a king or queen, groaning with the best of the best in our neck of the woods – A Taste of Otago.  (See my photo here).  And congratulations to our vendor Havoc Farm Pork for taking out the Restaurant Association of NZ Outstanding Producer.

I’ve been adding Oamaru Organics organic yams into my meals this week, stir-fried they give a lovely-sweet crunch to any meal.  Great to see Christophe back in the La Crepe caravan after his travels, his daughter Isa kept things going seamlessly while he was away.  Check out Catlins Kitchen smoked salmon pate if you haven’t already up on the platform, Debs make a great batch, it’s really good!  Otherwise, her farmhouse pate, homemade mayo & all is worth getting.  And in the coming weeks we will see many of our seasonal vendors returning again.  Rodger at Janefields is back this weekend too.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. Remember your keep cup / mug (if you forget, check with your beverage vendor if they have spares to borrow to save on a single use throw out cups – which are just not cool!), I will keep supplying them with cups where needed, it’s up to us all to make use of this.  And remember your containers, produce bags & your good selves of course!

We encourage MASK USE at the Market.  Please respect everyone’s space.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you there.

This Week in the kitchen

With spring on the horizon, I searched the archives for some recipes that are more suitable for the changing weather. Hopefully we won't be needing anymore soup! I am excited to try out this bundt cake after the market on Saturday once I have got my ingredients.

TEMPEH JERKY has returned!

Made from my organic tempeh (made from a mix of different beans, cereals, and seeds every week), cut in fine slices, dipped in a homemade peanut sauce, and then dehydrated. The result is a crunchy, savoury, yeasty, delicious little slice of heaven. You can eat them just like that, or you can change the texture by adding some moisture and add them to your salad, curry, stir fry…They are also super food for tramping! $8 for a jar. Daffodil Day - Gate Collection

daff day pt4.jpg

Daffodil Day is a vital fundraiser for the Cancer Society’s work in Otago & Southland. This work includes promoting health messages to reduce the number of people who are diagnosed with cancer; funding vital research about the prevention and treatment of cancer; and providing support services to people in your community who have been affected cancer. The Cancer Society is committed to keeping these services free and so fundraising events like the Daffodil Day help ensure that anyone, with any type of cancer, can receive care whenever they need it.
