Hi there
Happy Lunar New Year! January has galloped along at a great pace and holidays are almost over for some of you, meanwhile the summer fruit & produce at the Market right now is many, varied, sweet & abundant. Congrat’s to Julien at No.8 Distillery in winning another accolade for his Moka Gin made right here in Ōtepoti. It’s getting to the last of the season for Earnscleugh Orchards Co Op moorpark apricots many of which come off 100yr old trees, if you haven’t tried this variety yet they always have samples & pack your own for all their great fruit. Pauley Family Orchard in Cromwell hope to have the first small hit of the new season figs this weekend - find Brendon up on the platform. Check out Breads & More for their latest new bread – it’s a Japanese milk bread called Shokupan which I’ve enjoyed this week, I also devoured delicious warm samosas from Silk Rd last weekend for morning tea – very nice.
Have you checked out Slice of Heaven yet?
Gareth West & Sherilyn (a 1972 Anglo Ace vintage spearmint caravan) are a great duo at the Market, creating hand stretched New York style pizza topped with local Otago seasonal ingredients. It’s the first time in business for Gareth, (& presumably for Sherilyn) and he has felt supported by the local community especially over the various levels of a pandemic for the past two years. While living in Wellington working at the public library, he had part-time job at a local pub where he learnt to make pizza from scratch – (a 2–3-day cold ferment process). These days, he makes vegetarian & vegan versions with the Margherita as the top favourite of a Slice of Heaven customer. The vegan pepperoni is the next most requested with fresh herbs & rocket from Janefield Hydroponics, or his home garden utilized on many of the varieties. There is often a manuka smoked mushroom version and all can be sold by the slice or as a whole pizza - usually there are up to 6 different flavours to choose from on any given morning. Customers get a sneak-peak through the front & back windows of the caravan as Gareth works the dough, and just like magic within minutes a steaming, delicious thin based pizza is ready. He uses compostable packaging & composts any waste. The Slice of Heaven business is worked around Gareth’s day job as an archivist at the Otago Museum during the other half of the week. As the business has grown & picked up at the Market, he now has help in the caravan to keep up with demand on a Saturday. Gareth loves being part of the Market community and the atmosphere and having a chat with other traders and his regulars. Seeing the sun rise through Sherilyn’s windows as he prepares the dough is a pretty special thing early on a Saturday morning.
Gareth’s Personal Fav: Confit Garlic – which is a white pizza of roasted garlic with red onions & fresh herbs.

NZ Nuts
|
NZ Nuts will be back this weekend with some new processed nut products available for the market: walnut butter - a soft, creamy spread to serve with breads or crackers; ground walnuts - a great gluten-free baking ingredient, or alternative to ground almonds, as well as roasted walnuts - the ideal Saturday afternoon snack.
We're not sure if we'll be back at the market again before harvest, so it's potentially your last chance to stock up on walnuts (in-shell or shelled) until April.
You can also get your 2023 nuts at 2022 prices if you pre-order and pre-pay by the end of February. See Tim at the stall or email Valda on nuts@nznuts.co.nz for a price list. See you Saturday!

Stonehurst Gourmet - Herb of the Week
|
GARDEN SORREL (Rumex acetosa)
Large, narrow, arrow shaped leaves with long succulent stems - a bright green, clump forming, hardy perennial.
Ideal summer salad addition and/or winter vege as if trimmed back in late summer its will produce leaves all winter. In spring, you once again trim back the flower stems for summer leaf harvest.
The younger leaves have a distinctive lemony flavour, ideal for pesto, smoothies, salads and soups. Sorrel can be used, cooked, in place of spinach in many recipes, as well as adding the citrus tang to a dish to replace a lemon. Once used as a cure and preventative for scurvy due to its high vitamin C levels. Sorrel is also known to remove excess fluid from the body and also contains oxalic acid (which gives it the sour taste). WARNING: Limit quantities if suffering from rheumatism, gout, kidney issues or heartburn.
The juice of the leaves can be used to bleach rust, mould and ink stains from linen, wicker and silver! Garden Sorrel grows happily in moist soil in full sun - part shade. Top with organic based mulch once or twice a year (usually after trimming back the flower stems in spring & autumn). Kate
