Hi there

We had such a great morning yesterday frolicking with goats and talking to Shaun from Goat Island Dairy. His herd of milking goats are hilarious, very curious, affectionate and such characters. Goat Island Dairy will be profiled in this newsletter in the weeks to come.

Some of you will have noticed that there has been a bit of a shuffle up at the market. Janefield Hydroponics are now down in the lower market and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have them and Ettrick Gardens, both permanent vendors, right at the heart of the market being as how primary produce is the key to the success of our market. As a result of this move Whitestone Cheese and Wild Larder have moved into the space that Janefield Hydroponics had on the platform. Some of our smaller vendors from the northern end of the platform have also moved further south on the platform. If you can’t find your favourite vendor then be sure to ask as chances are they are present and very keen to see you!

Our coffee cup library is a huge success, so much so that we need more cups and mugs. If you have some languishing in a back cupboard then we could put them to good use. Super large mugs are not suitable as they don’t fit under a coffee porta filter but your average sized mug and cups are just perfect. Please drop any you might have into the market hub on Saturday.

Top Tips for Newcomers to the Farmer’s Market

Locals always seem to know exactly where to go and what to buy, and seem to possess some kind of secret, cult-like knowledge of seasonal favourites and exclusive deals.

The reality is this: Farmers market fans can indeed be fanatical but the farmers & growers & producers themselves couldn't be more friendly and welcoming. Here are 10 top tips for fitting in at the farmers market and getting the most from being a localvore.

Arrive in plenty of time (we are open from 8am – 12:30pm) but often earlier...
Come hungry!
BYO bags, cups, containers for cheese etc, cutlery and plates for ready to eats
Buy staples - you can do your weekly shop
Ask questions of the vendors and market staff
Bring plenty of cash - some of the vendors do have EFTPOS but cash is king!
Don’t just focus on fruit and veg
Don’t forget meat if you like & dairy, eggs and bread….
Don’t try to negotiate
Shop around the market
Buy something new and different every week along with your regular favs…

We are so pleased to see the marked improvements in customers shopping habits at the market. So many more of you are bringing your own cup, jars, bags and containers to use as you shop.

Over the summer we are really going to be pushing this even further. Put yourself together a kit for shopping that has re-usable containers for everything you want to buy.

You will find that you get a better deal from most vendors if you provide your own container and you can help us with our slow but steady move towards a zero waste market.

We will be looking out for shoppers who are well kitted up to photograph and share with y'all. For those times you forget we have you covered with our cup and bag library and a great assortment of bags and wraps to buy.

Christmas

The Otago Farrmers Market happens every Saturday over the holiday season. On Tuesday 24th December we have an EXTRA market from 6.30am until 10.30am. Be sure to come down and get the freshest produce for Christmas dinner and last minute gifts for the foodies in your life.
