This Week at the Farmers Market

28th November 2020

Hi there

cherries.jpg

It was with considerable sadness that we farewelled Wairuna Organics last week. Shaun and family have been coming to the market every week for the past 15 years all the way from their farm in Clinton.  Covid 19 has put paid to woofers and after a great deal of thought Shaun has decided to end this stage of his journey.  Many of you will miss the unusual varieties of vegetables that they bought to market and let’s not forget their carrots, that were judged to be the best in the country. Wairuna were one of the first vendors to move to home compostable packaging and try alternatives to plastic packaging of vegetables.

From all of us here at the market we wish Shaun, Arisha and Pia all the best for the future.

No asparagus this week, folks. Hopefully the sun will shine and they will be back next week.

But it is exciting to report that Earnscleugh Fruit Co-Op will be back and they will have the first of the season’s cherries!

See you Saturday.

Holiday Markets 2020/2021

images.jpg

This year we are making a few changes to our market schedule over the holiday period.

This is primarily because of how the statutory holidays fall this year and to avoid vendors having to pay staff to pick on Christmas Day and New Years Day. So markets will be happening on the following days and times.

Saturday 19th Dec , usual time, 8am - 12.30pm

Wednesday 23rd December, 6.30am - 11am (customers will be restricted access until 6.30am when all vendors will be in place)

Wednesday 30th December, 8am - 11am

Saturday 9th January 2021, usual time 8am - 12.30pm

NB: NO Saturday markets on 26th December 2020 or 2nd January 2021

Looking for Land! Company of Flowers

Esther .jpg

Do you have unused land or garden space you would be willing to share in exchange for the occasional bouquet of beautiful flowers? Do you dream of looking out at beautiful flowers?

If you have unused or garden space please do contact me.

My name is Esther Bosshard and I am looking for an area on which to grow flowers for my urban flower farm, Company of Flowers.

I am looking for a space in, or close to, Dunedin City, which could accommodate 100 meters square of garden bed or more, has a water connection, is sunny and has easy access. The area does not have to be gardened on before.

If this sounds like you please get in touch.

You can call me on 021 206 7454 or email me on thecompanyofflowers@gmail.com

You can read more about my project look on my website www.companyofflowers.com or you can come and visit me at my stall at the Otago Farmers Market on Saturdays between 8am-12pm.

Some people ask me, how do we eat the fermented vegetables, and what do we do with them?

Well, you can include them in sandwiches, pita, taco, burger…..

Just have some on the side of your plate and mix with the food you are eating, as a condiment.

You can also cook with it, but you lose some of the good nutrients in the cooking process.

I love to have a piece of toast or crackers with some vegan cheese, avocado or dip with a bit on top.

You can also put it in your burger, it brings some sparkles in your mouth!

I cook tempeh burgers at the market, and you can put some of my fermented vegetable in it.

I have a new batch of fermented with some lemongrass, quite incredible check it out!
