This Week at the Farmers Market

2nd April 2022

Hi there

bella.jpeg (2)

A big shout out, respect & thankyou, it was wonderful to be amongst you all last weekend.  A lovely busy, relaxed Market – where all that could & would (most of you) wore a mask – it made it a safe place for everyone to shop while we are still in the thick of it down South.  I know it was appreciated by many, so thank you & you could feel the cheer in the air!

This is the best time of year for a wide variety of fruit / vegies at the Market as it won’t be long till some of our seasonal vendors disappear for a bit - so make the most of AUTUMN before it disappears on us because April is here this weekend & daylight saving ends already!!  Parsnips have appeared at Ettrick Gardens in the last few weeks.  Sweetcorn is $1 a cob at Rosedale Orchard, great if you don’t need a whole bag full & you want to avoid plastic– I’ve been enjoying steamed corn on the cob every day this week drizzled in Dunford Grove extra virgin olive oil, so sweet, so good!  Simon at Rosedale also has huge bulbs of garlic hidden near the counter as well, but be in quick as those in the know, know!  Congrat’s to 3 years at the Market Toby & Debs from Catlins True Brew (his beer labels are a creative craft in themselves) & Catlins Kitchen.  There is always something interesting to buy up on the train platform & many characters to banter with including these two.

AND, we have FIGS this weekend! The Pauley Family Orchard have got a good bounty off their second pick this time.  But be in quick, as will only be around a week or two depending on weather.  Be sure to have some honey to drizzle with it or honeycomb (check out – Bennies Honey or Earnsleugh Orchard if you are looking) or on its own.  Or with a dollop of Holy Cow yoghurt or some creamy blue cheese from Evansdale or Whitestone Cheese & that’s a fresh, delicious pudding sorted, too easy, but you don’t need me to telling you the best way to eat them, I’m sure you have your favourite combo on this delicacy.

Some of you will have already met our new assistant manager Isabella (in photo) at the Market who we welcomed aboard back in February as Kristina went onto a fulltime role at the Polytech (but is keen to still volunteer from time to time in the caravan so she gets her Market fix!).  Isabella hails from a farming background in Invercargill & is a 3rd year student at Uni.

For those of you who are stuck at home we have a few vendors that can deliver to your doorGilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Waitaki Orchard, Princes St Butchery & others.  All their contact details you can find on our website under vendors.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

Remember your keep cup, return jars & containers to keep the ReUse cycle loop working & bags for vegies & fruit.  All of our Ready-to-Eats are more than happy to fill your container or bowl to take home with you.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  And please respect everyone’s space. We ENCOURAGE MASK use still. The weather forecast is looking good. Take care of each other & thanks for supporting local where you can.  And I hope you are doing ok this week.

Ngā mihi

This Week in the kitchen

Hey all!  This week I have found two great on-the-go salads from the archives. I think blue cheese is a must in all salads, and especially with pear, so I will definitely be picking up the ingredients for that this Saturday.

I look forward to seeing you all this week!  Bella (Assistant Manager)

Catlins True Brew & Kitchen - A Little Ditty from Toby

This weekend will be my 3rd anniversary of being at the country's finest farmer’s market... yippee...

The pic is our weekly bottle return...shows how much the lovely peeps of Dunners like to recycle...reuse..nicely...

"Where did the time go...lost in the ebb & flow...sliding through life's topsy turvy to & fro...

Crikey has it really been three years since I started flogging me grog...oops I mean selling eco craft beers...

It's the new norm...Saturday morn.. after dawn.. bit of banter up on the platform (does he ever stop talking... rhetorical)

Well it's a simple tale...toiling..testing ...tasting (oh yeah) shaking...boiling..making real ale for sale..

I get to meet and greet some of the finest friendliest folks...plenty of japes n jokes....a community cuddle...a helluva huddle...

So a big cheers to you all with living beers (love ya mother nature) me dears..

Chuffed...proud as punch cos I got a hunch we know it but don't show it (no flash...brash...crass..well this isn't jafa town)

But we have got the finest farmer's market in this ridiculously green and pleasant land...

Ta muchly Toby.

Dunford Grove

There is definitely an autumnal feel up in the air up here, leaves all over the place, and the last flush of raspberries and figs galore!

Thanks to you all, we’re close to selling out of our 2021 oil, so from this week we’ll pull back to twice monthly appearances on the platform: 1st and 3rd Saturdays.

Did you know?

The olive fruit forms its stone first.  The stones are fully formed now and for the next 8-10 weeks they’re adding flesh and accumulating the oil.  Sandy
