This Week at the Farmers Market

30th July 2022

Hi there

Willowbrook Pete 82nd.jpg

I think everyone is over this rain.  I hope not too much damage is done to your property, or too many disruptions this week. Our farmers have been up to their gumboots in it out there, & I don’t envy them working & harvesting in this!  Spring can’t come soon enough – August is next week so it’s not too far away now.  We lucked in with a sunny day last weekend at the Market (see my photo in the header) & it looks the same again this weekend, happy, happy, joy, joy!

Congrat’s to a couple of our vendors Brightside Microgreens & Havoc Farm Pork who are finalists in the Outstanding Food & Beverage Producers at the Otago Hospitality Awards 2022.  Wishing them well in the finals!

As usual there will be plenty of brunch options, coffee & beverages, great value fresh local fruit & vegetables from the region, milk, eggs, honey, pickles, fish, meat, craft beer, gin & spirits, pickles, bread, cheese, sweet treats & plenty more to stock up.

We really encourage mask use, some of us are hoping to avoid covid & winter lurgies if we can help it & I know a lot of you are too (as you let me know each week) - especially many who have compromised health or loved ones staying at home. (We have free spare masks in the caravan if you forget, which Dunedin Community House have given to us this week).

If you happen to have any spare cutlery at home you don’t use - (knives, forks, dessert spoons) our Chef Amy is sewing up some upcycled cutlery keep kits for us to sell in the caravan, feel free to drop them off on Saturday.  Or if you are keen to volunteer to overlock up some upcycled material produce bags for us let me know – (even if just a handful).

Check out the Dine Dunedin festival line-up (from 5th – 21st Aug) – ‘celebrating the food and drink that gives Dunedin it’s special flavour’.  See the full programme at https://www.dinedunedin.co.nz/2022 .  On Saturday 13th August we are hosting The Market Butchery Masterclass at the Market with Vaughn from Blue Mountain Butchery & our Market Chef Amy (see below for more details). Other Market vendors are featuring during Dine Dunedin - Dunedin Craft Distillers - Tasting and Winter Negroni or the Otago Spirits Festival hosted by No.8 Distillery.  And Dinner on the Tracks at night sounds fun.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens, Waewae, Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our SHOP Online button on ourwebsite www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only.

And happy 82nd birthday to orchardist John Gilchrist from Willowbrook Orchard this week. Still on the tools!  John as many of you know is one of our founding vendors.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!  See you there.

Wishing you well.

This Week in the kitchen

I found the perfect winter combo in the archives this week, soup, and something sweet to follow. Fritters and cream are high on the list of my favourite desserts and I can't wait to get some fresh fruit at the market this Saturday to try them out myself! (Bella, Assistant Manager)

Hello Picklelovers.

We are back this week with all the usual goodness.

You will notice that our pickle and curry paste prices have gone up by $1 to align with our stockists and online store (which will be live very soon).

Green chutney remains at $7 and crackers at $6.

HOWEVER, we are raising our bottle return incentive to $1, so as long as you return your jar the price will remain the same.

We hope this goes a little way to show how much we appreciate you! ♥️
