This Week at the Farmers Market

3rd April 2021

Hi there

care pack.jpeg

We look forward to seeing new faces from out of town & the regular ones too!  Easter weekend & we are open as usual from 8am, remember to bring cash with you on the day if you want to purchase as not everyone has eftpos.  Daylight saving ends on Sunday, the change of season is evident with leaves starting to fall around town & no doubt around Otago, all the new varieties of apples are pouring in at the Market & lots of colourful veges appearing.  Waitaki Orchard will probably be here just this week then away till next season.  Ettrick Gardens are away on a rare occasion this weekend, Heather is hitting the big six o, she will no doubt be looking forward to a lie in & a celebration.   But as always, there are plenty of vegies & fruit around the Market & coffee & brunch options.  We look forward to seeing Graham & Dawn return with The Porridge Bar this weekend hopefully.

The Market care package from lots of our generous vendors was well received last weekend & was collected by a deserving customer & her friend who nominated her. She recently had a brain aneurysm while heavily pregnant, she is home now with bub & family, safe, nourished & happy.  It was our pleasure to bring pleasure from the Market!

Happy Easter & see you at the Market.

Hazelnut Estate are looking forward to our first Easter Saturday market.  Call past and sample some of our delicious dry roasted hazelnuts as well as our Easter Hazelnut rocky road slice.  Hazelnuts are delicious and nutritious on their own as snacks or can be used in a variety of recipes.  Our hazelnut flour is gluten-free and adds great flavour to any baking.

See you Saturday.

NZ Nuts This Weekend

walnuts.jpg

After a brief break waiting for nuts to be ready, we look forward to being at the market again this week – and every week, for quite a while!!  We have harvested some nuts – most now in the drying room and over the next few weeks, different walnut cultivars will appear so come along and taste to decide your preferences.   This week we will have the first of this seasons Tehama walnuts, chestnuts, and hazelnuts, along with a clearance sale of last of the Vina walnuts (the sweet buttery walnut) at a 50% discount.  Remember to store your shelled walnuts in the refrigerator and for best quality, store your chestnuts the way you would store your carrots to prevent them from drying out.

Olivia will have some “wet walnuts” available – these are freshly harvested, had their hulls removed but have not been dried.  They are considered a real luxury in many European countries.  It is always hard to estimate how many will be required at the market so please email your order no later than Tuesday for the following weeks market so that you are not disappointed. nznut1@xtra.co.nz  These wet nuts are only available during the harvest period – so the next 2-3 markets.

We will also have quinces – peeling and coring quince can be a bit of a mission - I avoid this by steaming them whole in a covered roasting dish until they are soft and fall free of the core and skin.  The pulp can then be used for jams, quince cheese, popped through a jelly bag for quince jelly or used in desserts.  The larger cultivar will have turned a ruby red with the long slow cooking – whilst the smaller ones will be golden in colour.  IF you are not ready to use the quince pop them in a bowl and enjoy their perfume in the house!

Best wishes for this holiday weekend.

What is it?  I have a small prize for the first correct answer this Saturday, see you on the platform!

Did you know?

According to a report in El Confidential, new evidence suggests that taking olive oil on an empty stomach provides additional benefits to taking it with food.  Consuming olive oil on an empty stomach reduces gastric acidity by forming a protective film, this helps with the absorption of vitamins and other nutrients and assists the work of several important organs.
