This Week at the Farmers Market

3rd December 2022

Hi there

0CC0FB24-90CA-48D5-B95E-75BC3E737264.jpeg

It’s summer! The Mosgiel Brass Band are back with Christmas carols this weekend.  Simon from Rosedale Orchard is planning on being back this weekend with the first of the new season cherries.  And John & Pete from Willowbrook Orchard will have freshly picked cherries for you too.  Central Otago is all go now!  And great to see sweet strawberries coming through from Caithness Farm (& get in quick for the $3kg brown onions I see they had last weekend), Ettrick Garden and Janefield's.  So.... tis the season already!

The re/upcycled bags & keep-cups giveaway last weekend was a great success with Pat Johnston, and friends helping.  Pat had close to 200 bags she had sewn to giveaway, they proved popular with many of you & our cruise ship customers. Remember to bring yours this week.

Altrusa Taieri are at the community stall this weekend.  I had the pleasure of chatting to one of the members on a flight home recently and learnt about all the really practical ways they help people in our community with foster care packs, Tamariki Togs & Towels, care packs for many sectors in need, etc - quite inspiring what they do.

We have a NEW vendor.  Isser, Saber & Mudassur bring you Silk Rd Food & Catering with a different selection of dishes from the ancient Silk Rd (China to Central Asia) each week with authentic flavours using local ingredients.  You will find them up beside Mike at Bacon Buttie.

Bring CASH as some of our vendors are cash only. Remember your keep cup / mug (if you forget, check with your beverage vendor if they have spares to borrow to save on a single use throw out cups – which are just not cool!), we will keep supplying them with cups where needed, it’s up to us all to make use of this.  And remember your containers, produce bags, etc look for the ReUse posters on vendors that accept packaging back.

For those of you who maybe isolating or homebound we have a few vendors that can deliver to your door during the weekBrightside Microgreens, Gilberts Fine Foods, Ettrick Gardens (veg boxes), Waewae (vege boxes), Ronia & Pippi, Agreeable Nature Eggs, Blue Mountain Butchery, Tartan Sari, Dunford Grove, Evansdale Cheese, Oamaru Organics, Port Larder, Harbour Fish, Havoc Pork, Blueskin Bay Honey, Wild Dispensary, Judge Rock Wines, Hazelnut Estate, Matheson & Roberts, Bennies Honey, Whitestone Cheese, NZ Nuts, Breads & More, Dunedin Craft Distillery, Princes St Butchery & others.  You can find their details in our ORDER NOW button on our website www.otagofarmersmarket.org.nz

Remember, that only all our authenticated, verified Otago Farmers Market vendors are all within our gates who have our tick of approval.  Make sure you support them inside the Market carpark & platform & you will get a quality product.

Our Christmas Market lands on Saturday 24th December this year and will be an early 6:30am – 11am one, we can operate like the old pre covid days & lock off gates till opening this year - which always creates a frenzied rush of shoppers for Christmas day supplies & customers wanting coffee & brunch. The following Market is then New Year’s Eve morning Saturday 31st December – there are no extra markets over the festive period, just all the usual Saturdays so nice & straight forward.  Come by the Market caravan for gift inspiration - we have Market gift vouchers, Market tea towels, Market beeswax wraps & cards and Market bags from as little as $7 (cash or pay with banking online while there).  Many of our vendors will have gift suggestions and vouchers and are taking Christmas orders NOW.  You can always find their contact details directly on our website to get in touch with them.

Please respect everyone’s space & feel free to wear your mask.

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!   And thank you as always for supporting local.

Ngā mihi

BORAGE (Borago Officinalis)

Also known as 'Star Flower' due to the shape of the beautiful blue flowers that adorn this hardy annual during summer. Borge has been around for centuries, beloved by all era's and is often found embroidered on fine medieval tapestries.

The flowers can be eaten in salads, frozen in ice cubes for drinks, or crystalized for dessert/cake decorations. Young leaves have a cucumber-like flavour and a cooling effect. Leaves can be eaten raw usually finely chopped in salads, with pickles, soft cheeses, or yoghurts - it can also be cooked like spinach (or with spinach).

When planted near strawberries borage helps to stimulate growth - and attract bees! Medically a poultice of leaves can soothe inflammation and bruises. An infusion of borage leaves can help stress levels by providing restorative relief to the adrenal glands - due to the high content of calcium, potassium and mineral salts scientific research backs this concept. Borage was thought to help one gain courage - often given to soldiers before battle served in wine, however, one is not sure if in these cases how much 'courage' came from the borage versus the wine.

If burnt borage leaves can emit sparks and slight explosive sounds like minor fireworks due to the high nitrate of potash they contain!  Kate
