This Week at the Farmers Market

3rd July 2021

Hi there

Produce Bags.jpeg

It’s July already!  Good to see sunshine while I write this after the blizzards & snow of the week.  Living at the beach my lawns & paths are now pretty much covered in sand after snow at sea level, it sure was a doozy, but makes us appreciate a day like today in Otago.  We sure are lucky we grow such hardy winter vegies in Central Otago, our growers keep turning up each weekend with all the colours of the rainbow.

Apologies to the those of you who turned up for free nibbles at the caravan last week, Chef Amy ended up fracturing her arm last minute, but it will be good to see a familiar face with Nickee Charteris from The Port Larder back & stepping in to cook for the next two weeks while she can.  Heidi from Kapowai Brewery will be back at the Market early spring at this stage, apologies for those wanting her kombucha.

It’s also good to see the latest initiative from the government on ‘Planet Before Plastics’ at the start of #plasticfreejuly, it’s a start.  We have already implemented a lot of this policy for the past few years at the Market & don’t allow plastic cutlery, polystyrene packaging, etc & have encouraged our vendors to use compostable or sustainable packaging where they can.  In the Market kitchen we try not to use any single use packaging for samples & tasters, instead using little crockery bowls, or serving in traditional Asian soup spoons.  We still have a ways to go at the Market & as a country to get rid of plastics & single use anything, but only with your help.  Simple habits like bringing your own keep cup or containers & cutlery (for ready to eats), produce bags for fruit & veg are so handy & don’t take up any room in the bottom of your bag, etc.  We always have little produce bags at the Market caravan at the front entrance  for sale, made by local lady Illa in Dunedin & Kristina & I hand stamp them in the office - $3 cash each.  Just replacing plastics with paper, bamboo, compostable single use packaging is not the solution.  The solution is EVERYONE doing their bit & forming a healthy habit!  RE-USE.  And support those vendors that allow you to pack your own produce, etc or have refills.  People power works & I love that so many of you know it.   I don’t love that so many still don’t!

Shop your way around Otago this weekend…. at the Market!

Remember to scan in at the cones at any of the entrances (was so good last weekend to see so many people remembering!), thanks for shopping & we’ll see you Saturday...

Olive oil straight from the press has a small amount of vegetable material suspended in it.  We let this settle then draw the oil off the top, repeating the process several times until the oil is completely clear.  Each varietals oil is kept separate until this weeks task of blending, we blend to taste as the oil from each varietal has a different flavour profile.  Then it’s off to the testing lab for analysis to confirm “Extra Virgin” status.

Now we’re completely out of 2020 EVOO, I’ll be on the platform this Saturday with all our infused oils, nuts, olives and more, if you’re after EVOO, bring along one of our bottles (clean and dry) and we’ll fill with this years new oil!

Did you know?

Over 1,000 varieties of olives grow throughout the world and each type imparts its unique flavour to the oil created from it.

Habitate Nursery

Habitate farmers market.jpg

Habitate Nursery grows fruit trees organically in Waitati. They will have a great range of apple trees for sale at the next two markets. Plant your orchard this winter with these local trees, mainly heritage varieties, as these are the most tasty, healthy, and suited to Dunedin. Dessert, juicing, cider, vigorous and dwarf trees all available at great prices.
