This Week at the Market

3rd October 2020

Hi there

Gee whizz the 1st of October all ready with snow settling earlier in the week and temperatures of 23 degrees predicted for the weekend. Fickle Spring!

Company of Flowers starts back at the market this week. Esther will be in her usual spot at the northern end of the market with her gorgeous bunches of spring loveliness.

Oamaru Organics are away for another few weeks but Wairuna Organics will be back this week so if certified organic vegetables are your thing then you’re sorted!

Michele and I are off to Wellington this weekend for the Farmers Market New Zealand annual conference. This promises to be a fun catch up with other market managers and many informative sessions with the likes of Kay Baxter from the Koanga Institute and Angela Clifford from EAT NZ. It also marks the start of Wellington on a Plate so I guess we will be obligated to have to see what the capital has on offer. It’s a tough job but someone has to do it.

See you Saturday.

Locavore Boxes to your Door!

locovores 2.jpg (1)

If you can't make it to the Otago Farmers Market on a Saturday morning for whatever reason & you are still keen to support local growers and makers, and here’s a way you can do that:

Locavore Boxes include produce from a number of Farmers Market growers and producers in their boxes: veg from Oamaru Organics, Janefield Hydroponics, Caithness Farm,  Wairuna Organics, bread from Gilbert’s, dairy produce from Holy Cow, Kombucha from Kapowai, eggs from Agreeable Nature, fruit and veg from Rosedale Orchard. They also source from other local producers not found at the market: BL Beekeeping (based on the Taieri), Roastery Door coffee from South Dunedin, Vern Paddock Produce from Mihiwaka.  That means you can still support your local growers, buying locally grown /produced food - with the added bonus of having it delivered to your door! Check their website - www.locavoreboxes.co.nz

Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust Gate Appeal

Assistance Dogs Pic .png

Pictured: Assistance Dog-in-training Kowhai with her collection bucket.

Assistance Dogs New Zealand Trust proudly breeds and trains dogs to enrich the lives of New Zealander's living with a disability, 90% of whom are children with autism. This week, volunteers will be collecting donations as part of their Annual Street Appeal, a fundraising event to help to support the training of more life-changing dogs. The waitlist for a dog is over 5 years which, for children under 12 is far too long! ADNZT are entirely funded by the community and hope to raise a massive $75,000 this year which is the total cost of breeding, training and supporting an Assistance Dog throughout their working life. Your generous donations will help ADNZT provide more dogs to families who are in desperate need of their services. For more information, visit assistancedogstrust.org.nz

Community Stall / Wildlife Hospital Students Association

Wildlife Hospital Students’ Association.jpg

The Wildlife Hospital Student's Association is a student led group whose goal is to raise money and spread awareness for the Dunedin Wildlife Hospital. This Saturday we will be at the Farmer's Market for our annual street appeal to support the Hospital.

The Wildlife Hospital is a veterinary facility specialising solely in the treatment of native New Zealand wildlife. They are a not-for-profit charity who rely heavily on the generosity and kindness of their donors. Prior to its establishment in 2018, patients had to travel long distances to receive treatment. Now they can be treated quickly and with high rates of success, which has been a tremendous benefit to our precious native species.
