The market is a great way to warm these chilly April mornings!

4th April 2019

Hi there

Alyson Willocks Flowers.jpg

April is one of my favourite months. Still plenty of warmth in the sun but with a crispness to the air that I find invigorating. This weekend daylight savings finishes so as we fall well and truly into autumn and gain another hour of snooze time on Sunday morning we can look forward to more light in the mornings, something that market staff and vendors will appreciate as we set up in the wee small hours.

Catlins True Brew debuts at the market this week! The chips and dips from Catlins Kitchen will now be complemented by some brews from a true eco brewery, it doesn’t get better than that. Toby and Debs will be in a new position between Urbn Vino and Bay Rd Peanut Butter. Be sure to call by and discuss with Toby what makes his brewery NZ’s first true eco brewery. Oh and be sure to have a taste while you are there!

Figs will be at the market this week! You will need to be in quick as they will doubtless be in hot demand!

It is great to see that NZ Nuts are back this week with their wonderful Black Krim tomatoes and walnuts.

Speaking of tomatoes, these have been in big supply at the market with buckets of seconds for sauce making available. March was the hottest ever on record in Dunedin and tomatoes love the heat. Check out the varieties around the market and make your good selves a mixed tomato salad, not only visually gorgeous but scrummy as well.

See you Saturday

This Week in the kitchen

NZ Nuts back at the market this Saturday!

Ugly Tomatoes.jpg

Valda is delighted to be back in the market this week – normal position beside Alice at Otago Organics. It will be great to be back and apologies to customers who have missed me – Ill be down now every week through the walnut season.

This week I will have – Black Krim Tomatoes – a full flavoured heritage tomato, quince, hazelnuts and the last of 2018 walnuts in shell and pieces........ and there may just be some chestnuts for the early birds.

See you Saturday! Smiles!

The Crooked Spaghetti Co

Never Let it be said the Crooked Spaghetti co shy away from a good garage project (and that includes the beer)! First it started with the old pram and left over wood that was converted into a trailer to pull pasta to the market, then it was converting a couple of 44 gallon drums into arm chairs. But this week at the market we unveil our latest inspiration, the result of left over shower lining and the purchasing of half a scooter off trade me. We bring you the - Very Excellent Special Pasta Automobile - or V.E.S.P.A for short (due to legal and copyright issues we can’t use Vespa!) a totally self-contained pasta delivery system. So pop down and see the crooked madness! Next week we will have................sorry you just have to wait! But trust me it’s epic. Until then keep it crooked!

Selwyn Shanks

Well, autumn is pretty well here, and some gardening activities are slowing down, but a lot of other things are picking up...firewood cutting, mulching before fallowing, cutting back summer growth etc. So make the most of this Saturday at the market getting your garden tools and chainsaws sharpened, as well as those kitchen knives for Easter!
Bring along all those things that need sharpening for Selwyn to keep busy. Over the next few months, Selwyn will only be here once a month, but can do "house calls". Just ask him about them.

Wild Dunedin Festival at the Community Stall!

Wild Dunedin 2019.png

We're excited to have the Wild Dunedin Festival at the market Community Stall this Saturday! They are going to have some art panels featuring the wildlife of the Town Belt that families will be given the opportunity to colour, as well as some of their young science communicators talking about the birds and critters featured on the panels. This is a great chance to learn a bit more about the wildlife in our region and should be a lot of fun!

Wildlife Hospital Students' Association at the gates this weekend!
